I think the CV joint on my driver's side is going bad (looks a little wet), how long can i Drive on it?

I looked at my CV joints and the one on the driver's side has some kind of oil on it. How long can I drive with it being like that until itll need to be replaced? Its not making any noises or anything...yet. And how much will it cost me when i do have to have it done? Would i just need it replaced on that one side? I dont have a lot of money.

Also, i have some oil leaking from around the oil pan. Its not a lot just a few drips here and there. What could be the cause of that? Should i take it back to the last place that changed my oil and have them fix it? The oil was changed about a week and a half ago. Can i keep driving it with this leak until my next oil change since the leak is so small?

The car is a 2000 Civic Si with 95,000 miles on itI think the CV joint on my driver's side is going bad (looks a little wet), how long can i Drive on it?well if the cv joint is not making noise yet you most likely have a long time before you need to have that fixed ..when it starts to make a clicking noise you have anywhere from a week to 6 months or maybe longer before it breaks when it starts making noise i would get it fixed cost around $90.00 for a haft shaft (axle with both cv joints) and about one labor.. if you car did not leak oil before you took it in for the oil change you could go back and ask them to check it ...

Oli pan...a simple oil change will not cause lots of leak//unless guy poured 1/2 qt down the side or overfilled [did u chek level] wip it clean and see what it really is doing before asking a mechanic..[they aim to please and will be happy to put a new 500 dollar oil pan gasget %26quot;just to be safe%26quot; could b valve cover gasget..I think the CV joint on my driver's side is going bad (looks a little wet), how long can i Drive on it?If the CV joint is going bad, it will start to make noise when you turn. You can drive it until it breaks or until you can't stand the noise.

Suspicious $2,200 repair invoice Opinions please?

2003 Cadillac DTS 108,000 miles Okay last month my check oil level warning came on my dash.. so I added a quart of oil and it was fine since... a month later today I go to dealership to get my oil changed... I thought it would be smart to mention it so I asked if there were any leaks in the car for oil to be safe... about an hour 30 minutes later my name is called saying my cars ready... I was a little suprised beacause the service Advisor never came out and talked to me saying if they found any leaks or not.. Usually the Service Advisor comes and sits down and talks to you when theres a spotted issue..Some of the Service Advisors even take you to the lift and show you the Issue and explain.... This guy did nothing.. this Service Advisor ive never seen before. ( there are usually 7 of them working) so I go to front pay and get my INVOICE... and on it it says reaplced oil filter 1 gmoil oil and a plug....

then at the Bottom it says %26quot; Drain Plug would not reinstall. replaced with new... Oil leak from Oil Cooler lines, valve cover gaskets, oil pan, oil preassure sensor vechile needs reseal... Price $2,200....... So Im thinking what the hell? so I go looking for the guy and cant find him at all. when they pull my car up I noticed alot of dirty finger prints on the hood Usually these guys are very clean... I just feel real suspicious if they actually checked it or just made up some crap... So I think it would be smart for me to go to the Cadillac Dealership in the next city too and see what they find.. Because I dont see how if my car was leaking oil from all these different places wouldnt I SEE OIL on the ground the next day when I had it in park? wouldnt I SMELL burning OIL from the car when I got out? I just feel like they saw my car and my age and that im in College and think my parents bought it and are trying to pull one on me...While outside the Dealership I poped open the hood and it was still dirty... How would they know what leaked if it was dirty arent you suppose to clean it and then look?.. the car runs ultra smooth no funny smells no funny sounds no puddels under the car at all.....Opinions please because Im not mechanic just my instincts tell me their wrong.. I can afford it but I got money like that from not spending it like that..Suspicious $2,200 repair invoice Opinions please?Sounds like a typical dealership with young inexperienced technicians that worked on your car. Take the vehicle to a reputable shop and if they are they will do what is called a UV dye test which is where the technician will clean the engine free from dirt and oil then he will add the UV dye solution to the crankcase. Then run the vehicle at about 2000 to 2500 RPM for a specified amount of time and will then take a UV lamp and special UV highlighting glasses and carefully go over the engine to look for signs of leaks! (this is the proper way to check for oil leaks) if a labor extensive leak is found you may want to weigh your options as for the Northstar 4.6 engines are pretty famous for oil leaks if the engine has to be removed and replaced it is expensive as for this vehicle labor time calls for 26.5 hours labor ( I know, I have done quite a few of them) Hope this helps you :)Suspicious $2,200 repair invoice Opinions please? It has never made sense to me to %26quot;reseal an engine%26quot; with over 100,000 miles on it - that project, if done correctly, is only slightly less labor than completely overhauling the engine and significantly more labor than putting a re-manufactured engine in the vehicle.

And I agree with you - it's time to get a second opinion.Suspicious $2,200 repair invoice Opinions please? You got played. Sorry. NEVER give a mechanic an open ended invitation like that!!!Suspicious $2,200 repair invoice Opinions please? If its leaking that bad you would leave oily footprints to the dealership workshop door and back to the parking area, 1. Take it back and ask why it was not cleaned properly,2. ask to see the car when raised up on the ramp and where are all these leaks as a competent mechanic or technician would know what and where to look,3.Ask for a different technician than last one as you have never had such bad service from the dealership before,4.if they are not willing to do any one of these things write to the upper management or the Car manufacturer and ask is this the kind of service that they recommend,5. even a home DIYer mechanic knows where a oil leak is coming from as they leave a oily mess down the side of the engine block normally, as you said you put a quart of oil in if, the engine has that many leaks you would need to move to texas oil country to keep it going,so cant be that bad, complain about the bad attitude of the last service technician, and then ask about the invoice statement as a whole engine is probably cheaper. hope this helps in some small way and don't leave next time you see grubby hand or finger prints on the paintwork, that's substandard workmanship,if he cant be bothered to clean them off what else cant he be bothered about ?

How do i get my husband to do something for me without nagging?

good luck with that! How do i get my husband to do something for me without nagging?Start calling a girlfriend and get a ride to the store. Do you have a credit card or money to have someone else fix it? If you have the resources, have it towed to a shop. How do i get my husband to do something for me without nagging?Ask him to get it done by weeks end. If he doesn't - hand him the food shopping list and let him know that you'll be at home to help unload the groceries when he's done. Make him do every annoying chore on the planet that requires a vehicle and he'll soon enough get the message...When he does complain about going to the store simply say - If my truck was fixed you wouldn't have to go...How do i get my husband to do something for me without nagging?I now you said you and him don't have the money, but try a friend or relative that lives close by and see if he/she would lend you some money. They can always get paid back later when you and your husband manage to to pay that person back. if he tells you, %26quot;Why did you have to borrow? That's just another bill we have to pay.%26quot; tell him that you told him over and over but he would not do it. By the way, it sounds like he doesn't trust you with the jeep. I wish both of you the best and hope things get better. See if he will go for some counseling.

Can i get money from Meineke?

So last thursday i decide to get a oil change from them which happens when im tired because i would prefer to do it myself.

I walk in there i ask about the type of oil change i ask for the most expensive which is the prefer with tire rotation.

I leave the car he says about 45 minutes.

Fine there is a all you can eat pizza place across the street so i decide to walk there while i get the oil changed.

Before i sit down i get a call that me radiator busted???

I don't eat i go directly back so i lost 10 bucks........

he mentioned as soon as they put it on the rack it must have had a hole already. I WAS IN SHOCK HOW COULD THAT BE.......

Guy mentioned he can replace for 420 out the doors i look at him crazy and then offer to fix for 300. Wow what a price break.

No way i can do myself and i don't have that type of money.

I TAKE A PICTURE OF WERE THE CAR WAS PARKED FOR A GOOD 5 MINUTES NO COOLANT LEAK AT ALL NOT EVEN ANY DROPS.

I take a picture of the floor no coolant at all.

I WOULD HATE TO ASSUME THEY PUNCTURED ME RADIATOR TO MAKE MONEY DURING THESE HARD TIMES.

THIS COMPANY IS WITH BBB AND THE ONLY REASON I TRUSTED THEM.

He offer to get me a radiator for 125 when i just looked in the bb and found 1 at Kragen for 99.99. Wow this guy does not stop trying to make money.

I go across the street and buy coolant and water to attempt to drive home.

a hour past less then a mile i go pick up all the parts i ordered.

I had to sell the radiator which means now i have to flush the whole engine also. Only was i could drive the car home with out it over heating.

This is all thursday on the day off which if i knew they seem to be this way i would have changed myself in 20 minutes but i want some rest. But ended up putting a whole days work until thursday night.

Very next day i am working i am a merchandiser in this car is the commuter car. About a 2 hours in to the day i noticed i was leaking oil and coolant. Its a common problem when you change the radiator that the water pump goes also.

Yes the guy did not tighten the oil pan screw and i had to fill the up again!!!!!!!

Yes drip drip from a so called Professional location backed by the BBB.

So i have call in from work friday after 2 hours of working to fix the car. I arrive home it is to late but i did buy the parts to fix. I live in a apartment and how i wish i had a garage with light for i can fix that day and not miss another day at work. That's friday i let work know i will not be able to come in i have to fix the water pump. About 4 hour and it cost about 80 dollars for the parts and at any location 250 for the labor.

Im back to work Sunday car all good now thanks to me being lazy and the oil place being crooked.

Total money lost.

Friday for work:200

Sat work:250

Labor thur:300

labor sat:300

What can i do about this????

Any help because i have never encountered a situation like this.

PS will always change me own oil from now on.Can i get money from Meineke?Your experience with this chain matches mine. I don't know how they can get any return business if they're ripping people off.

Your radiator probably wasn't busted, they just told you it was. In fact, in all probability your water pump was leaking, they saw a drip and %26quot;assumed%26quot; (whether in good faith or bad) that the leak was coming from the radiator. $420 sounds like a decent price for parts and labor if they're replacing the entire cooling system. Which is crazy expensive, but when you've got to take old radiator hoses off it's a good time to replace 'em.

If you still had that radiator you could take it to an independent radiator shop to verify, if the radiator is good or if it's bad and you can prove Mieneke put a hole in it you may have a claim for fraud. Aside from possible punitive damages (those laws vary by state) you aren't entitled to any more than it would have cost for a competent mechanic to fix what they did to your car, possibly attorney fees and costs, and the value of loss of use of your car (i.e., what a rental would cost). A competent mechanic could likely have fixed all this in about 4 hours.

It may be worth the initial consultation fee to talk to a lawyer. Can i get money from Meineke? The only thing you can do is call the store manager and complain about the oil leak. It'll be hard to prove that he did somethign to the radiator, even with the pictures, but you certainly can try.

Your best bet is to just forget about it and not go back.

  • How do I prop up my 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R to change the steering bearings?

I have a car jack and two regular jack stands. Is it possible to do the job with these? What would I need if I can't? Where do I apply the jack? It seems like the oil pan is the only exposed surface of the engine besides the exhaust. Is the oil pan strong enough to support the bike? How do I prop up my 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R to change the steering bearings?I believe that 'Bike' is correct, since you will have to leave the back wheel on the ground, make sure you leave the bike IN GEAR, and be sure to chock it. If you have a rental shop around, I might suggest renting a bike lift myself. Even then you will have to support the back wheel, because the balance point of the bike will change as you remove and replace parts on the front end.

Either way, make sure you have at least one other person with you, if something goes whacked when your lifting or adjusting the jack stands, you will need someone to help keep your machine from hitting the concrete, which by the way, I hope is the surface you plan on working on.

On the oil pan, yes it SHOULD hold, if you are talking about a car jack like the pit crews use, make sure you put a flat(3/8s) piece of plywood, say 4 inches square on it to distribute the load over a bigger surface. I use a bike jack, on my HD Ultra and because of the rails I have to use the oil pan, but the rails are 4 inches wide and some 24 inches long. How do I prop up my 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R to change the steering bearings? The oil pan should be strong enough. If you're concerned, lift where a bolt head shows because it means there's something behind it. Two jack stands with a board between them should support the bike well enough. How do I prop up my 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R to change the steering bearings?A simple car jack with a protective piece of plywood across it will be strong enough to hold it upright. It is better if you have a center stand since you can then prop the center stand up on something else and that will lift the bike off the ground. However you lift it up, make sure you do a really good job of stopping if from moving around on the kick stand or on the jack so it won'[t fall later while you are working on it. I lifted my bike this way to take off the forks and change the fork seals. It works pretty easy, but it took two people to make sure the bike got lifted and secured properly first. How do I prop up my 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R to change the steering bearings?Put the bike on the center stand and a friend on the back seat to raise the front wheel. I don't think a jack stand will fit but an old milk carton will or wood blocks, just enuff to keep the wheel in the air.How do I prop up my 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R to change the steering bearings?I agree with both. Make sure when you are doing this have the bike in gear and maybe even have something wedged in with the rear tire to be an extra support to keep it from moving, sometimes even the slightest move can cause trouble... especially where you are in relation to the bike. The oil pan should hold. Two jack stands with a board/beam between them should support the bike just fine. If you know what you are doing you should be ok, but if you are unsure or just want assistance I would go with having a buddy around.

1996 mustang gt. oil Pan leak?

my oil pan started leaking a it gets worse ever day and i found out the gasket on it had gon bad and needs to be replace and i whant to know how mutch a shop would pay to change it out1996 mustang gt. oil Pan leak?1 HOUR LABOR AND COST OF THE GASKET. THIS IS EASY ENOUGH TO DO YOURSELF SO SAVE SOME MONEY AND DRAIN IT BEFORE YOU DO IT!!!1996 mustang gt. oil Pan leak?It would cost approximately, $100 at our dealership to

replace the oil pan gasket and to refill it with oil. You can

do this job yourself for about $20, if you can get under your

car. Drain the oil, remove the oil pan bolts. Clean the old

gasket material from the matting flanges. Apply a small

bead of silicon to the new gasket to hold it onto the pan and

install it onto the matting flange. Install all the bolts finger

tight. Starting with the upper right bolt, snug it until tight,

then 1 full turn if you do not have a torque wrench. Do this in

a Criss-cross motion until all the bolts are tightened, meaning

the next bolt should be the lower left one, then the lower right

and the upper left, etc. Do not over tighten!1996 mustang gt. oil Pan leak?Motors manual calls for 2.5 hours, that plus the oil/filter/gasket should get by with around 200 bucks.

I filled my engine with water... how do I fix it?

I have a 1996 dodge intrepid. I was trying to do a radiator flush, and installed the garden hose adapter into the wrong hose( the hose in the top of the engine marked %26quot;heater%26quot;), and filled my engine with water... oil pan had more than a gallon of water in it... it's draining now... what else do I need to do besides an oil change?I filled my engine with water... how do I fix it?A brain?I filled my engine with water... how do I fix it?you should be alright just draining the oil and refilling with fresh oil. the water should evaporate out as soon as you get the engine hot. if you have milky looking oil after you run if for a couple hundred miles change it again. just dont leave the engine sit for a long time until you know all the water is out- run it every day.I filled my engine with water... how do I fix it?just do an oil change on it once its all drained out, but i still don't see how you got water in it by doing it that way,the hose your talking about suppose to go to the heater core, you,d have to literally open up the oil fill cap and fill it with water to get oil in the pan on it,that's normally a closed system on that car, anyway let it all drain out and change the oil and run it about 30 minutes them change it again and it will be alright, good luck,EDIT try and let it drain out as long s possible the fill it with oil and see if it will start and run for at least a few minutes,i know the hose your talking about now on it,it hasn't done any damage as of yet but it will if you cant get it started and dried out,its not going to be a real costly mistake just one you,ll remember for a while, once it starts it will evaporate what water is left in the engine but still do two oil changes on it to be sure, good luckI filled my engine with water... how do I fix it?um if u have been turning the key over with water in ur motor u might need a new motor.........that is a sure fire way to break the pistons crack the heads spin the rods etc....

bottom line drain the oil refill with fresh oil......start motor let it come up to operating temp.........trun it off and check everything again...then change oil again in about 2 days.....I filled my engine with water... how do I fix it?This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever read on here. Get a haynes manual before you do stuff like this especially if you don't know what the heck your doing. I'm curious if you cranked the motor or did you realize it pretty quick. I would pull the spark plugs and spray some wd-40 in the cylinders and crank the motor couple times to blow any moisture out. plus obviously change your oil a couple of times.

    Lost some Transmission Fluid!?

Ok so i was out doing my own oil change today for the first time and when i got to the step of removing the old oil filter i found one that looked like it near the front of the car. I start to loosen it up and it leaks a lot so i thought that might be normal so i kept screwing and it kept flowing and it was a redish color so i was thinking...%26quot;OH NO, this isnt an oil filter!%26quot; after loosing a small amount of transmission fluid (im sure that is what it was, the filter type thing that i loosened said transmission on it and it was a redish fluid.) i tightened it and began to search for the true oil filter which i located just behind the oil pan. Anyways to my question. How do i go about checking my Transmission fluid levels and what type of transmission fluid do i use if i need to fill it up some...is all kinds universal or are there different kinds. Sorry for such lame question but i truly appreciate any honest answers. Thanks.

    -Cory

(I have a saturn 1997 SL2)Lost some Transmission Fluid!?There should be a transmission fluid dipstick/filler behind the engine on the transmission somewhere under the hood.

Check it, and if it is below the mark, then go to an auto parts store and ask them what kind of fluid you need for your car, carefully add a little bit at a time until it is above the low mark.

I'm not sure what you took off that let it drain - usually transmissions don't have external filters.Lost some Transmission Fluid!?Start the car let the engine warm up to normal temp and check the tranny fluid in park on level ground.Lost some Transmission Fluid!?dip stick with red knob. make sure car is warmed up and engine running when checking level. look in owners manual.Lost some Transmission Fluid!?tranny fluid is poured down the dipstick tube hole. That is what those long necked funnels are for .Lost some Transmission Fluid!?Do you have the operators manual? Some trannies have level plugs.Fill to level.fill with dexron III .It does have a tranny filter for sure.I think the 97 has a fill and dipstick combo on the auto.tranny.Check running in park.

1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?

Hello, i want ur opinion on my cituation. I want to go to florida, and the car i have is a 1994 oldsmobile delta 88 lss with 248,000 miles on it. its currently running strong, starts up like a car with 30,000 miles on it. I do an oil change every 2,500 miles. In addition i have replaced the power steering pump, oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, fuel filter, air filter, main serpentine belt, spark plug wires, spark plugs, new tires all within the last 5,000 miles, and i regularly jack the car up and inspect and repair rust, and check for leaking. I check the fluids 3 times a week. Do you believe that i do enough preventative maintence to ensure that it will run well/ last a long time? i have confidence in the car to make the 2500 mile journey to florida, but im wondering how someone would look at this from a diffrent prespective, possibly another mechanic. Thank you in advance!1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?mm sounds like you do more than enough to keep you car in good condition ..continue doing so and the car will last longer as of going to fl.. then go for it but when stoping for gas check everything over oil, breakes, tranny fluid, everything you check on your car and drive easy and safe and you will be ok

friend drove his truck with almost 400,000 miles to alabama from northcarolina and back and had no problems

\have a safe trip1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?it should make it but also you might want to look at your head and intake gaskets as well they are known to leak on those engines no matter what you do. if your oil looks kinda like choclate milk or has a brown texture to it then it is leakin somewhere. another thing check your serp. belt. if it is cracked every 2 inches replace it and if not do yourself a favor either carry a spare with you or believe it or not carry a pair of nylons with you. the nylons will make it to a shop or gas station. also carry the tool that you would need to relieve tension on the tensioner pulley. but other than that you should make it ok. take other preventative things with you in case of an emergency. such as a full size spare tire. tire inflator or air compressor. jumper cables, a couple of snack bars high in protein. flash light and a screwdriver set phillips and regular.1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?okay i thought of going to a far away place too in my 1996 bmw after i fix it but what i figured is just go at night when there isnt as much heat or stress on your car and i personally think it will do fine if you have faith and your a mechanic you should be ok idk tho but i am a very smart college student lol.

  • Stripped Drain plug help..?

I began to give my 04 mazda 6 an oil change yesterday. I removed the undercarriage from the bottom of the car and to make a long story short I realized whoever owned the car before me stripped the oil drain plug and I could use some help. I believe I know how to get it off, but I doubt the drain plug would be useable after. So my question is, what are my options? The link shows a pic of what i'm dealing with, its step 9. Its a 6mm hex key flat head screw thats on the oil filter housing. Can I simply go to auto zone or AAP and pick up a new plug? Would they have a temp plug I could use until I can get a replacement? Do I need to buy a whole new oil pan? (i hope not).

Thanks for all the help!!Stripped Drain plug help..?auto part stores sell oversized bolts for oil pan plugs.

How do you fix a stripped oil pan?

Just wanted a little insight on this...Wal-Mart in Durant stripped my mothers oil pan, they paid a shop in town to fix it. The shop simply put an oversized plug in it but for some reason when I took it back to Wal-Mart in Durant they said they couldn't change it because it had an oversized plug in it and eventually the plug wouldn't seal I guess. They were telling me the shop should of put a helicoil in it instead, I took it to a 2nd Wal-Mart in Denison and they changed it no problem, then when my mom took it to another Wal-Mart in Sherman they said they couldn't change it because of the oversized plug. Who is telling the truth about what? I am getting tired of this whole run around and I am just about to tell Wal-Mart that they can fork out the money for a new oil pan.How do you fix a stripped oil pan?Wal-Mart should have replaced the oill pan and here's why. The oversize plugs are self tappers, and each time you take them in and out, you run the risk of cross threading again. That's what they're afraid of. It got stripped originally, because someone overtorqued it. Their poor work, has now become YOUR problem, and that's not how to do business. How do you fix a stripped oil pan?If Wal-Mart damaged your oil pan, they are responsible for repairing it correctly. If they had the repairs done and now won't change the oil because of the repair work done, they are responsible for getting it corrected. They damaged it, they repaired it, they have to stand behind it.

File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. How do you fix a stripped oil pan?just tell walmart that stripped it that you want them to fork over the money to replace it. stop all the hassle of going from walmart to walmart. most mechanics will not touch something that has been alterd so they will not be reliable if it breaks or whatnot so tell walmart in durant to pay for a new pan to be put on.. they make billiions a yr so they can dish out $100 to replace it.. good luckHow do you fix a stripped oil pan?i have fixed lots of oil pans and have used everything from silicone to a plug....my opinion is they are just giving your mother the run around and if they are the ones that broke it to begine with i would make them replace it.How do you fix a stripped oil pan?those people at wal-mart are jerks. if the drain plug was stripped all they had to do is put a self tapping plug in it. a self tapping plug comes with a washer and it makes its own threads. How do you fix a stripped oil pan?The plug size has nothing to do with changing oil. But for obvious reason, if you simple putting the new oversize plug in without re-threading (making new teeth) your plug would not seal properly. Eventually it would not seal and leak oil. Worse case is it would fall off while driving and destroy your car. Have it fix properly by putting in new thread and proper plug of any size. Or, just get a new oil pan. Depend on the car it can be expansive.

The Wal-mart that does not touch your car is smart because it is a lot of responsibilities. I would not touch your car with plug like that. The thread is stripped, you need new thread or new pan with proper thread, period. But, the plug size or type does not matter. My car have 50 cent .5%26quot;x1%26quot;long s.s. bolt with a 25 cent s.s. washer for a plug. I save me money to know these things. How do you fix a stripped oil pan?Stripping or rounding off the hex on an oil pan bolt has nothing to do with the threads. If the threads were screwed-up there's no way in hell I would have allowed anyone to screw an oversized threaded oil drain plug on *my oil pan! Wish you'd have explained exactly what about the drain plug was origionally messed-up.

I don't understand why a new %26quot;standard%26quot; oil pan drain plug wasn't substituted for the first one Walmart messed up.

Here's where you made a big mistake. A new car dealer of your mothers car should have done the repairs to begin with. If a complete new oil pan was needed then so be it. You should and could have communicated with them through the process.

1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?

I have an oil pan gasket problem, one day i went to the local store went in came out and i locked my keys in the truck with it running, i had to call my gf to come let me in which it took her an hour to get to me, mean while right before she came i noticed an oil puddle under the truck, luck for me she got to me in time, i was able to get it home with no problems, anyways i looked under the truck and found that the oil pan gasket had been pushed out from the front of the pan, i read my chilton and it said that the motor had to be pulled to put a new gasket in, i loosened a couple of bolts that i was able to reach and push the rubber gasket back in place and tightened it back up, my question is what would have made that gasket pop out like that ? and my warrenty will not cover the gasket, if i had to have it changed how much do you think it will cost, Thank you to everyone that replys,1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket? The best thing for you to do is to have the pan gasket replaced. I do not believe that the motor has to be pulled. I have a 98 ranger, and the oil pan is right there in plain view with no obstructions. Chilton is not a reliable repair manual anyway. You say that you have already loosened a couple of the bolts, did you look to see if the pan would just come down if all the bolts were removed? There should be nothing in the way for you to do this job. Just drain the motor oil, remove all bolts, you may have to %26quot;tap%26quot; the pan with a rubber hammer to break it free, just clean it up, get you a new gasket, put you a thin film of gasket sealent on the pan's gasket surface, (just enough to hold the gasket in place for assembly) put the bolts back in, and tighen them to where the gasket just starts to squeeze, but not too much. put oil back in the engine, check for leaks. now as far as the reason the gasket pushed out could be crankcase pressure, just as a safe measure, replace the PCV valve, they are relatively cheap, you can clean them, but for the cost of a new one, just get a new one.1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?the gasket probably split and squeezed out from pressure, you should have it replaced, some people loosen the bolts and sqeeze a sealant in there like silicon, %26amp; then retighten the bolts, I wouldn't recommend that.1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?I can't speak for all cars, but usually you don't need to pull out the entire engine just to replace an oil pan gasket. But with newer fords, who knows? LOL

It can start to leak just from age. I don't think leaving your car running did anything. The oil pan is just that- a big pan. There is a tube hooked to a pump that pulls oil out of it and up through the engine, but it's not like the space in that pan is under lots of pressure.

I'd talk to my mechanic to get a repair estimate. In the meatime keep a very careful watch on your oil level. The big danger is that oil gets low and you damage the engine. I don't trust the Oil Low light to come on soon enough.1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?Have you checked your PCV valve....sounds like your getting a buildup of crank case pressure.....If it is pressure, better get that fixed before your main seals fall out on the road.

In the Inland Empire area I need help. Other than the BBB who can I file a complaint with for automotive prm?

In December of last year I travel to San Bernardino, my van broke down. I had lfter replaced. The party suppose to change the oil as he did the work. It turn out he reused some of the old parts and still charge me full price. He also seal my oil plug. So the next time I needed an oil change I had to have te oil plug remove along with the oil pan, it cost me an addtion $350 to have my oil change. He said he done nothing wrong. I read the law in Californa and it said its against the law to put on silcone sealent. I went to the BBB and they side with him, inspike I show all reciepts and letters with three different companies stating what he did wrong to my van. I just feel if he charge me $700 to do something, I should not have to pay someone else to correct his mistake. I live in Wisconsin, the company is in San Bernardino so I can't take him to court. How do I get my money back for his mistake? This is a guy who told me to promise him when get to Wis I should sell the van.In the Inland Empire area I need help. Other than the BBB who can I file a complaint with for automotive prm?I think it would be hard to recover any damages from the mechanic, but you could file a complaint with the California State Dept. of Consumer Affairs. They are responsible for the regulation of auto mechanics. Mechanics have to have a licence to operate in the state of California. In the Inland Empire area I need help. Other than the BBB who can I file a complaint with for automotive prm?i feel so bad for you! usually the BBB is better than that. I'm not exactly sure what you can do except talk to a lawyer. you could try talking to the owners or the corporation the mechanic worked for. you can file a complaint with the e.p.a. though, no monetary reward for you. sometimes you just have to learn a lesson the hard way. again, I'm sorry that you got ripped off. you are not the only one and there's many people out there that feel your pain!!

Transmission fluid change on a toyota rav 4. Is there a drain plug on the pan. How do you remove the shroud?

The shroud covering the oil and transmisson appears to have plastic fasteners that will need replacing once removed. What size are they? Is there a drain plug on the bottom of the pan, or would it be easier to suck the fluid from the fill pipe? Anybody do one of these? Thanks for any advice.Transmission fluid change on a toyota rav 4. Is there a drain plug on the pan. How do you remove the shroud?they did away with drain plugs several yrs. ago. now you have to drop the pan.

  • I'm having car problems - advice?

I went to Wal Mart for an oil change, and they told me I had a bad oil pan gasket and rearmain seal. What does that mean? What parts will I need to buy? And about how much will that cost me to fix?I'm having car problems - advice?well unless you are leaking oil then the gaskets are fine unless they tore them up, and the gaskets are just rubber or cork seals that go inbetween parts to make sure that they dont leak, and to buy them just go to an Oreillys and tell them the make, model, year, and motor size and tell them that you need a rearmain seal and an oilpan gasket, shouldnt be more than about $30

Questions about a 88 pontiac fiero?

ok it was running fine i dropped the transmission pan and changed the oil and filter. i put new oil in it and ran it once it reaches operating temperature its starts slipping..could this be caused perhaps i put to much fluid in it?? if so how does that happen?Questions about a 88 pontiac fiero?the age of this car is where most shops will not entertain a transmission drain and fill, a flush, or a filter swap. Reason being the result of your experience. Fluid level too high, check the fluid level is critical as the transmission must breathe, to full of fluid cannot. Can only advise the treatment of Trans-X, one time. If this does not cure it, then its tranny time. luv serQuestions about a 88 pontiac fiero?it probably don,t have enough fluid in it. get it hot, park on a level surface, leave it running and check it. fill it to the full mark.Questions about a 88 pontiac fiero?Anyone ever notice whenever Bandit 60 shows up everyone gets a thumbs down.

Have a 1990 hoda accord wont start?

i changed the oil and replaced the pan gasket, changed the thermostat had to disconect 2 sensors to get to the thermostat did not disconect battery.. put everything back the way i took it off did not break any wires off ...or for get anything went to start the car and car wont start any ideals, on why it wont start by not disconnecting the battery when i took off the sensors have anything to do with it? and if so how do i reset the the brain tryed to disconect the batery and reconnecting car turns over just wont startHave a 1990 hoda accord wont start?Sounds to me as if a trip to the local Honda repairman for a little talk is advisable.

If your battery power is low, charge it.

Check the connections that you disconnected to make sure -- if you can do it without loosing all the new oil you put in.

You didn't touch by mistake the wires from the ignition system?

Sorry, not much help -- if your car turns over, I would try again, this time floor the accelerator and keep it there - no pumping -- while you let the engine turn over for a little while. If it is flooded this should help.

Edit: perhaps by means of a voltmeter you may be able to determine from the outside if inside sensors (if that's what they were) are connected properly?Have a 1990 hoda accord wont start?it sound liek ur crank sencor got disconected other then that then ur rotor module got burned out .unless it's newer brand andrun on a module and coil .Have a 1990 hoda accord wont start?sounds like your crank sensor(located by the pan gasket on the engine block) it may have come disconnected without your knowing.

What to use to fix a spot chipped off on the tranny's mating surface to oil pan?

The last mechanic who changed my tranny's oil .stripped three holes thread. He used 3/8 bolt to replace the 5/16 one.because this he chipped a piece of the aluminum off the mating surface, right by the thread hole(outer edge),about 2/3 size of a penney.now it is leaking.

Got a set of heli-coil to take care of those stripped holes.

    How to fix this chip?

    Will %26quot;J B weld%26quot; work?(high temp)?

or what else work better? What to use to fix a spot chipped off on the tranny's mating surface to oil pan?JB Weld should do the trick. Heli-coil the stripped holes, Put a bolt in the hole then JB Weld where the aluminum chipped off. Pull the bolt out, (that was to keep the JB Weld out of the threads). Let the JB Weld dry for at least a day then sand the mating surface. What to use to fix a spot chipped off on the tranny's mating surface to oil pan?Yeah it'll work for awhile...

The best thing to to do is to heliarc or TIG and grind it down.

Then make a gasket probably neoprene or some other oil

    resistant material and thicker.

    99 Mitsubishi Eclipse Motor Trouble?

Alright. I love my Eclipse. Its been with me through a lot. I've completely fracking rewired the damn thing. Ripped out the complete stock stereo system and replaced it. Done some interior mods. Had to have the transmission replaced twice and computer replaced once. I mean this car seriously shouldn't be running for what its worth, but I cant buy a new car.

Its an 99 RS automatic with 160K on the engine. Basically a 4 cyl 16 valve 2.0 liter non turbo. It had a rod tapping for while. There was a small leak in the oil pan It stopped tapping after an oil change with lucas treatment. One night it lost power and the tapping turned into a loud rapping (almost like a machine gun) I got it to drive (rather slowly and loudly) 2 miles home. It didn't wanna leave 25mph. The higher the RPM, the faster the rapping (obviously)

I realize I shouldn't have abused my baby like that. But now I need help. Where do i start with diagnosing the problem? How do i tell if its my low end or high end? Lucky me it didn't seize so would a rebuild be worth it? Please help... Haynes doesnt cut it!99 Mitsubishi Eclipse Motor Trouble?if yo would of delt with it earlier you might have been able to get by with just replacing that bearing..

now it probably messed up the crank and rod.

check your oil and i bet you see alot of metal shavings.

you can find a rebuilt 7bolt for cheap... because they always have this problem. its called crankwalk.99 Mitsubishi Eclipse Motor Trouble?Oh, you lost a big-end bearing, new motor time.

Frankly, rip your stereo out and find a $500 runner and start anew. No need to race, Find an old K-car or something boxy like that, just wash it and slap some 155 SR13 whitewalls for the lowrider look and keep the tunes turned up.99 Mitsubishi Eclipse Motor Trouble?Yep sounds like the rod bearing went out. Time for a new motor. It would be low end.

No, a rebuild is not worth it with 160K on it

  • My 2001 Audi A6 Quattro is leaking, how much will it cost to fix it?

I just got my oil changed and they stated that I had a major engine oil leak, major trans pan leak and rear differential leak. How much will it cost to fix all of this?My 2001 Audi A6 Quattro is leaking, how much will it cost to fix it?its probably not as much as you think. The engine oil leak could be something simple as a valve cover or oil pan gasket, the trans could be the transmission pan gasket and the rear end could just be the diff cover... I would send the money to have it looked at at a creditable shop. Spending $500 on fixing it is still cheeper than $500 a month in payments for 3 to 5 years...

If my Automatic transmission -may- have a small leak, Do I... 1) Have gasket(s) changed, or 2) Stop-Leak ATF?

My 1995 Ford Escort - may- have a small Transmission Fluid leak. This is because the Oil Change shop couldn't come to a conclusion about whether it was leaking or not, they just saw (smelled? They were under the car when it was off) what looked like Transmission Fluid wither seeping, or trying to seep, from the pan. I didnt look at it myself, but I saw the tech (young kid) wondering if it really was a leak.

My transmission has 148,000 miles. My bigegst concern is how to change the Vacuum line someone in another post said may be contributing greatly to rough shifts *and I was going to ask that person where to find it, and if it is common for shops to change it, to help it shift better, since it makes sense it would affect it.

As for the Fluid itself: I recently added a little under a quart, as it was low. I did so after my drive from NJ to Westernmost PA.Now my transmission is OK, and it felt good on the Highway. (I wonder if the fluid level went 'up' on the highway, like Tire Pressure does, due to heat and expansion, thus making it feel OK.)

-I- feel like if the Transmission Is leaking, or seeping, or wanting to leak, the leak would be from the Gasket. If that is so, I would love a shop that has no qualms about working on it to:

    1) Drop the Transmission Pan,

    2) Change the Gasket and Screen and Filter, as all three are on an AT if I recall right;

    3) -NOT- FLUSH THE FLUID THAT IS IN THERE AND THE TORQUE CONVERTER, as I believe the stories about new ATF killing Old ATs when they are flushed and changed completely; and

    4) Re-filling the lost ATF with Valvoline MaxLife, probably about 3 quarts for the pan-dropping, maybe with 1 bottle of Stop-Leak MaxLife ATF added... And Vaccum line 'changed,' Gasket and Transmission replaced, Transmission saved, 1/3 the fluid changed. I would -love- to do this.

Is that the best way to go here? Will I be able to find a shop to pay to -do- that? A transmission place will charge more and want to do it all, right? So should I just look for a general mechanic, and talk him into it?

Or should I just pour the Stop-Leak ATF in there and hope it seals itself? I heard that too much of that is NOT good.

Anything else I need to be aware of with this issue, of wanting to service my still-good transmission before it becomes worse in a way that won't kill it?

Thanks! - JosephIf my Automatic transmission -may- have a small leak, Do I... 1) Have gasket(s) changed, or 2) Stop-Leak ATF?drop the pan and change the fluid and filter with a new gasket. by all means don,t, i repete don,t flush it or you could wind up with more leaks. what about looking under it and see if the pan is wet. if it,s just a pan gasket then that,s not too bad but lets just hope it,s not the front seal or you will be looking at some money there. If my Automatic transmission -may- have a small leak, Do I... 1) Have gasket(s) changed, or 2) Stop-Leak ATF?If you have not had the transmission serviced, at 140,000 miles it needs it. So just find a shop that will service it right. That is the filter removed, cleaned/replaced, and refilled. But avoid chain transmission and auto service franchises (like AAMCO).

Yes, transmission fluid does expand as it gets warmer.

Also the leak maybe some where else. Like a rotten line to the transmission cooler, or a leaking seal. But before you go out and spend a fortune on transmission replacement, realize that transmission even new use some fluid. That is why the level needs to be checked on a regular basis.

As for hanging shifts, changing the fluid and a new filter may correct this problem too.If my Automatic transmission -may- have a small leak, Do I... 1) Have gasket(s) changed, or 2) Stop-Leak ATF?Change the filter and pan gasket don't mess with that stop leak crap.If my Automatic transmission -may- have a small leak, Do I... 1) Have gasket(s) changed, or 2) Stop-Leak ATF?clean the under side of the engine and transmission. then drive around for awhile and check again. if you keep an eye on it for a while you can determine where the leak is coming from.then you will know where to start. don't use stop leak until last resort ,(that would only be temporary anyhow ) and you would eventually have to replace seals.

Has anyone ever changed the transmission oil filter on a 05 Nissan Sentra S 1.8?

I own this car and I tried changing it's automatic transmission oil filter. I was able to drain and remove the pan. I got all the bolts out of the filter, except for one. This one bolt was near the driver's side. I could spin it clockwise or counter-clock wise, but it didn't seem to loosen or tighten. I took it to a jiffy lube, and they too were unable to remove the filter, due to the same bolt. Can anyone tell me, how to remove this bolt?Has anyone ever changed the transmission oil filter on a 05 Nissan Sentra S 1.8?WOW. that bolt has a 10mm nut and washer on top of the valve body. That nut is just spining. I have to worry about just why you thought you needed to change the filter screen. Many Sentras get by with just regular trans drain and fill. My 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?

I didn't pay for my tags on time in november 2007. So i didn,t drive it. every once in awhile i would start it but soon it ran all the way out of gas. I know smart right. So know at the time it was january I changed the oil pan gasket ,put some gas in it ,the batt is dead so i charge. Start it and it starts shacking. So now i go to the auto parts store and get spark plugs and cap and rotor put it all together .Now it's time to start my car and it runs fine Turn it of check my work start it again then here comes the smoke. When i first start it nothing when i push and the gas it starts to flow. I take it out for a drive and after awhile it will stop smoking. Now what did i do to it?My 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?....the patch helped my mom stop smokingMy 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?it is running rich. could have an coolant temp sensor bad telling it that the motor is warm dumping gas and causing the smoke till it warms up then it fine. id check that temp senorMy 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?first find out where the smoke is coming from (spilled oil on the exhaust will burn off) but if there is a major leak you may have to re do the gaskets again

if you are referring to smoke from the tail pipe, it is an older car so small amount is expected from worn valve seals and guides if it is excesive you can try (bardahls no smoke) an aditive for the oil but find the cause before you do anythingMy 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?sounds like a comedian you do. speak like a clown you do. must be kidding you are. what did you do, you ask.

most likely the intake valve seals are cooked .. its an old car you know

the oil sips past the seals into the combustion chamber and you get the white smoke

I take it the smoke is white , cause if it's black... that is unburned fuel and it would be stinging your eyes

one remedy I use is add about 4 oz. of brake fluid about 200mi before I change my oil and that softens the seals and frees the piston rings if they are seized on the pistonMy 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?what color is the smoke?

    blue = oil

    white = coolant

black = unburned fuelMy 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?Get it the patch, or gum.My 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?Really need to know what color smoke you have.

White, blue, or black? Also, what does it smell like?

Does it smell like gas, or maybe sweet smelling? My 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?By getting another car! I know it harsh but even if it a $500 car, you will probably be better off, you are going to spend more than that on this pile just guessing at whats wrong. But really it could be that the crank case isn't getting airflow

Wait I misread your question! The oil is leaking down though the valves and probably the cylinders. Replace the engine or have it rebuilt.....or get a new car.My 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?Well, you didn't. What happened is the oil seals on the valve seats have gotten old and begun to wear and shrink. When the engine is shut down and is cooled off the oil drips into the cylinders. When started, it burns off the oil and leaks in a little more. As the engine heats up, the seals close, the oil leakage stops, and the smoke goes away.

This is not a life or death problem and the engine will continue to run (if that all it is). The problem may reduce some with normal operation (or not). There is a product sold at most auto parts stores called %26quot;engine restore%26quot; it's made by Bardall, comes in a silver can with black letters. Get some, use it. You will be happy again. That stuff actually works and will help that problem. My 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?easy hillbilly fix . for a full tank of gas add a half of a moth ball to your tank . half a tank 3/4 of moth ball . and if you have a throttle body carb remove the filter start the engine and give the throttle a pull as you pour a gallon of white vinegar down the carb then drive it aroundMy 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?possibly the rings if it is oil smoke ( you can tell by smelling it) if it's gas or water smoke could be a sensor (if smoke smells like gas) or if it smells like anti - freeze (sweet smell) possibly head or gasket. My 88 Cadillac is now smoking how do i stop it?It might have froze and caused a leak in the head gasket. Or when you replaced the oil pan gasket it leaked and caused it to over heat that will make it smoke.

  • 1990 Nissan 300ZX engine (no turbo)?

This one dude is selling a 300zx (with a little problem). He went and got an oil change. however, unfortunately, I guess the oil pan wasn't tied hard enough or something like that after the oil change. Now, on his way home from the oil change shop, he began to hear a knocking sound from the pistons. the faster he goes the worse the sound gets.

Is the whole engine needs to be replaced?

If so, how much would a good used 90' 300zx engine cost?

Is it possible to replace the non-turbo engine with a twin turbo?

How much the installation will cost?

thanx1990 Nissan 300ZX engine (no turbo)? If the Z was leaking oil, then more likely the noise is the lifters. As you loose oil pressure, the lifters will start to make the noise. The car needs to get oil right away, it can not be driven like that.

Now, if the oil was replaced and has the normal level, and still the noise is loud and steady (never goes away), you got a knocking problem there and could be the lifters that got damage, or something else like the valves and even the pistons.

Those problems are common on the VG30DE engines after many years of use, and that story of loosing oil might just be a bunch of BS he is telling you to try to sell the car.

If you wish to buy the car, make sure to get it for cheap, otherwise, is not worth it. You have about 90% chances that you will have to fix that engine, so you will have to add at least $2K to it.

A new engine is always better, you can get a short block or a long block (I recommend you the long block to avoid problems and complications) or you could repait the old engine if you wish to upgrade it. A NA engine (non turbo) is not really worth upgrading as the price will not be worth the extra power you can gain. I suggest leaving it NA and just replace the engine (long block as I said) and be over with it.

You can buy a NA long block at Nissan, Stillen, Z1, etc, etc. Engine plus labor will run about $2K to over $3K depending on who and what you do.

To go for a TT (twin turbo) is a different story, and you need to have at least $10K for the conversion. Basically you need to buy not just the engine, but the turbos, air piping, water piping, oil piping, intercoolers, radiator (you must change it to fit the pipes), AC Condenser (same as radiator, you must change it), ECU (computer) for the TT, and many more small things but that add lots of $$$$.

A twin turbo conversion is only worth the money when you have a good Z and want to upgrade it, and you want not just a stock 300HP engine, but something better. It is your chance to upgrade the turbos, intercoolers, cams, ECU, etc, etc. Price for a real upgrade and conversion is over $15K. A 600HP setup will run you very easy for $20K (600BHP which is about 450-500 RWHP).

Don檛 forget, the 300ZX is an old car and will need also many repairs for other things. You should keep extra $1K or more in a safe place dedicated to the car as it will ask for it. Trust me, I know. Replacing the harness is a good idea at this point, and it might be hard as Nissan is discontinuing it already.

Good luck.1990 Nissan 300ZX engine (no turbo)? If you have the know how, and tools, I'd say go for it.

If you have to pay someone to do it, don't. The cost of repairs will exceed the value of the car.1990 Nissan 300ZX engine (no turbo)?Sounds to me like a B.S. story. If a shop failed to tighten the plug or filter, they would be responsible for any damages. And why did the dumbass keep driving it if it was knocking?? Check with a reputable engine rebuilder in your area, or check online with Jasper Engines.1990 Nissan 300ZX engine (no turbo)?if it was a loud clicking, theres also the possiblitty of it just being the lifters. when an engine is low on oil, that is an indicator, the lifters will be drained of oil and you'll hear them clicking and they can get quite loud and will get faster as the rpm's increase. this unfortunately how i tell when to add oil to my car :P i need to fix that leak if i can find it....

basically you need to have a mechanic, or someone whos mechanically inclined look at it and listen to it.

    Rear main seal change?

Ok so my rear main seal on my 1983 Buick Regal is bad and is leaking oil from it. so ive bought the new seal but im wondering how hard this type of rear main seal is to change. Because people have told me that this kind of seal can be changed without taking out the engine or transmission. People have told me it can be done just by taking oil pan off and changing it from in there. Is That true. Here a pic of the kind of seal it is. I will add a couple of minor things. 1.)Use a small screwdriver to push on one end of the old seal to get it started to come out. 2.)Get a can of brake cleaner and use the little tube the comes with it and spray out the channel that the seal comes out of. 3.)Use a thin coat of oil to lube the new seal before sliding it in, makes it go in much easier.

Be glad they are the rubber type seals and not the rope seals. Those are a pain in the ace to change.Rear main seal change?what engine and what type of transmissionRear main seal change? Can be done, take off the pan. You will need to remove the rear crankshaft journal cap. You take one half of your two piece seal and after gently removing the old one above the crank slowly push it up and around the crank into the engine. Then the other sets in the cap and you install the cap to the proper torque specifications for that engine.Rear main seal change? As stated above provided seal is 2 piece. One piece seal a lot more work.

    How many quarts of oil?

thanks in advanceHow many quarts of oil?Do as Bob says but 7 qts. should be more than enough. How many quarts of oil?the whole tranny takes 11.5 sooooo get 9 just to be safe. Replace everything and put in 5 quarts. Start the vehicle and run through all the gears waiting about 10sec in between shifting. check level and add. repeat until the fluid is correct on the dipstick

  • How do I fix this oil leak?

My 2000 Explorer is leaking a bit of oil. I took it to the local mechanic, who's a good guy (but foreign and very hard to undertsand)--he %26quot;fixed%26quot; it and didn't charge me a dime. But the leak is still there! I went back and asked him about it, and he said the oil pan needed a new pin--but to wait until the next time the oil needed to be changed (which is a few months off). I didn't really understand his reasoning, and I don't want to wait. Thoughts/suggestions? Thanks! How do I fix this oil leak?Aint no such animal as a pin on da pan!

He probably was trying to tell you the leak was at the pan (pin) and he tightened up the drain plug on the pan (pin). I know what you mean 'bout them furiners. I can't hardly understand them yankees that done moved into my area!

Te reason to wait until the next oil change is the drain plug (and he may call this a pin) has a bad gasket on it. If he removed it to change the gasket, you would loose all the oil. It has to come off at the next oil change, and he must think the leak is not severe enough to require immediate attention (and adde expense). Sounds like this guy might be looking out for you. Prob'ly oughta keep him as your mechanic. If the language thing comes up again, keep asking til you understand, or have him write it down. How do I fix this oil leak?well if you have to put in a new pin then your oil is going to come out anyway, so you can wait or change your oil now and replace the pin, pretty much the only option. sorry. How do I fix this oil leak? This guy sounds like he's good.... keep him! He was probably saying pan, as in oil pan leaking.... if that's to be fixed and its not such a big leak, he was just telling you to wait till you need the oil changed, so not to waste it since its gonna be changed when he replaces the oil pan gasket. But I would like to add this.... KEEP A CHECK ON THE OIL LEVEL, maybe once a week should be good. Don't want to add a engine to that oil pan. By fixed it, he probably tried tightening down on the oil pan, which sometimes fixes it, since the bolts can loosen under the heat and cold they see. But it didn't do it. You could just go ahead and get him to do it now if you want, he had good intentions. How do I fix this oil leak?the seal on the plug in the pan could be worn or the gasket on youre pan could be worn

    Transmission Service?

I have a 1999 Vovo S80 with 250,000 Km.Brought it in for Transmission Filter %26amp; Oil change.Techs showed me Oil pan with large pieces of clutch material in it.

Car was road tested everything still seems to be working fine.

Suggested tranny rebuild for approx. $1000.

How common is it to find such material in pan?Transmission Service?Very comon thats why you change fluid.Transmission Service?Trust Me a Brand New Car comes off the assembly line, as soon as they crank the motor, shift the transmission, it through off the metal flakes, Do they also need a new transmission?

Ask them this question, you'll get the proper work done.Transmission Service? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.Transmission Service?Transmissions don't need rebuilt if the clutch is wearing, it means you will need to replace the clutch. They are trying to hose you. The mechanic knows the tranney is fine, so if you pay for the rebuild, he is going to clean the outside of the tranny, replace a couple old bolts and laugh at you will drinking beer with his buddies. Don't fall for it.

Drive it until the clutch starts to slip, then tell a mechanic you need a clutch replaced.

    Water in my trucks oil?

ok my truck was running fine but i was a lil behind on my oil change so yesterday i went and got my oil changed at a local shop and than went to pick up my friend that lives 60 miles away, 50 miles of interstate, well i go pick him up and everything was ok. well going today to drop him off and after about 30 miles of interstate i hear a pop and i see smoke coming out my exaust in the rear view mirror, than my power steering went out but i got to the side of the road and noticed my brakes were not working either, than i realized my truck shut itself off for some reason. so i look under the truck and see oil coming out from the passanger side of the oil pan where the gasket is. the wrecker told me that there was a good bit of water in my oil cuz it was a yellowish color and it was not really oil textured, how could water get in there i know it wasnt from the shop, it was a well known shop idk if i can say any names on here but it must have got in there some other way, btw there was no leaks that we could see from the outside of the engine like around the heads that water could have got inWater in my trucks oil?he was talking about anti-freeze in your oil from a blown head gasket or intake gasket. if it was the head gasket or intake gasket then you won,t see it from the outside. that,s what it sounds to me like, the head gasket or intake gasket. water flows through the intake too.Water in my trucks oil?Head Gasket.Water in my trucks oil?Check the radiater. It holds water to help cool the engine. It might have a leak in it.

How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?

    I have a 1990 Chevy Camaro RS. With a 305 TBI. Stock I think is 170hp.

I've resealed %26amp; cleaned the oil pan, put a new oil pump, changed the timing belt, resealed %26amp; cleaned the intake manifold, and a few other tune ups.

What should I do to get some more horsepower out of this engine?

My budget is about $500 for parts. How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?A $500 budget is tough to work with but here is a big hp boost combination if you can go up to about $725.

How do I change the oil in a 1999 Rodeo and add transmission fluid?

So here's the thing: there are two pans under the truck, my husband drained the wrong one and we think it was the transmission fluid. It has a hard time shifting now - we only drove it to see if that was the problem. How do we fix this problem? He added the new oil - so we are now overflowing on oil as well. Where do we add the transmission fluid? Is there anything else I should know? Please don't let me lose my favorite ride!!! Help me!How do I change the oil in a 1999 Rodeo and add transmission fluid?Try not to start the engine again until you have drained the engine oil and refilled it with fresh oil to the proper level. Be sure the drain pan is big enough to hold nine quarts and just forget about trying to 'save' any of the old fresh/dirty mix. You can leave the filter alone.

If we're talking about an automatic transmission, the good news is it uses just regular Dexron III fluid. The bad news is you have to fill it from underneath: there is no dipstick tube. To the left of the drain plug, the trans mission pan should have a sort of notch in its shape. Within the notch, there should be another plug. You'll have to pull this and actually pump the fluid vertically into the trans through this hole until it runs over. You should grab perhaps six quart bottles for this as it's hard to all of a bottle this way. I'm cheap, so I screw the applicator cap from a bottle of gear lube onto the ATF bottle and push a length of hose over that to get it done. Just don't squeeze the bottle hard: the gear lube cap is a sloppy fit. It will be messy and transmission fluid stains badly ,so wear junk clothing and have some cat litter and rags handy. How do I change the oil in a 1999 Rodeo and add transmission fluid?assuming it is an automatic transmission you will fill it through the dip stick tube. easy just pull out the dipstick labeled transmissionand see if there is fluid on it. if not put a few quarts in start the truck hold the brake and switch through the gears to get the fluid in the valve body. check the fluid level and put more in if it needs it. check it in park with the engine running. the engine oil is in front of the tranny so just have your husband look for a different drainplug under the truck and change the oil. also just to b safe you might wanna take your vehicle to a shop when your husband is done and have them check all your fluids to make sure they are at the correct levelHow do I change the oil in a 1999 Rodeo and add transmission fluid?there is a fill level plug on the side of the transmission. same on my 2000 passport. How do I change the oil in a 1999 Rodeo and add transmission fluid? As for the engine oil, completely drain the oil and change the filter.Ruining the engine with too much oil in it will create smoke and could damage your engine (requires approximately 5 quarts of oil). On the transmission, there are two drain plugs, one on the transmission oil pan and one on the transmission case off to the side of the pan. The transmission is filled from the plug on the case. This now becomes the trick, you need some kind of pump to get fluid up and in until it starts to flow out freely. Use Dextron 3 (III) automatic transmission fluid (ATF) only. Replace plug, start and run the car for three minutes, shut off, remove the plug. If fluid comes out, replace the plug and you are good to go. If not, add more fluid and repeat the procedure.

    Fan clutch blowed up?

I have a 1990 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed(it turns as sharp as a freight train) with the stock fuel injected 351w. About a month ago it stalled, I re-cranked it and there was a whole series of bad sounds under the hood. I turned the key off immediately and pulled it back into my driveway with a chain.

From what I can tell it looks like the fan clutch literally exploded and a piece of it shot through the water pump and into the timing cover.

Its probably a good thing it happened because the water pump was probably about due to be changed and as I got in there I realized the timing chain was worn, and since a piece of fan clutch dropped into the oil pan I had to pull the oil pan which needed a new gasket. Had to pull the plenum to get the motor high enough to change the oil pan gasket so i needed a new plenum gasket too. Also realized it was time for motor mounts and valve cover gaskets and complete tune-up. Anyways the truck is back together and runs great and sounds great... well it sounds great everywhere except from the driver seat. lol the tailpipes are about 20 feet behind my head so I cant hear how beautiful my straight pipes sound from all the way up front. The truck has no catalytic convertors from the factory- I guess it counted as being a heavy duty truck and was exempt from certain emissions laws?

Anyways my question is this.... Anyone other than me ever heard of a fan clutch breaking the water pump and timing cover? I know a lot of mechanics and no one believes me. In my dirt track racing days ive seen plenty of fans come loose and hit the radiator but not the water pump and timing cover.Fan clutch blowed up?I've never heard of it happening but when something is spinning over 1000 RPMs, anything can happen when something breaks loose.

I knew a guy got killed from a grinding wheel coming apart because he was grinding on the flat side of it. A piece went through his forehead.

Like I said, RPMs and breaking apart cause weird things to happen.Fan clutch blowed up?Never heard of it.

Most fan clutches are an oil chamber, and almost can't cause a problem. The worst they do is bind and stop slipping as they are supposed to. This does not sound like an oil hydrostatic clutch. I have seen clutches that were electric, but I don't see how they could blow either. I would love to see the pieces.Fan clutch blowed up?in over 49 years id have to say that is a first

    Auto mechanic rip off...help.?

I went in for my routine oil change when the mechanic advised me I had a leak to my 94 Legend. They temporarily fixed this by using an oversized plug.(?) That seemed to remedy the problem but as time went on the little spots on my driveway turned into huge leaks. My mechanic said that the oil pan needed to be changed out and a new gasket kit installed. The job cost me $700 ($300 of labor). That was in Aug 06.

I've had suspicions about my mechanic and how there always seems to be a problem with my car. I have changed mechanics since then. On my last oil change I was advised that I have an oil leak. I had 2 different shops inspect the oil pan/gasket to see if it had really been replaced and both shops said no. One even went as far as to say that they just probably cleaned the pan to look new but upon futher inspection they can definitely say it had not been replaced.

What should I do now? Would getting a lawyer be worth it? I'm leary of going back to the mechanic.Auto mechanic rip off...help.?Contact the Bureau Of Automotive Repair if you have one in your state. Or the Better Business BureauAuto mechanic rip off...help.?always get a second opinion.................Auto mechanic rip off...help.?You can go back and ask him where he bought the pan from, and have him show you HIS receipt for the pan, NOT the receipt he gave you. Also, you can ask him if he still has your old pan. You can take him to small claims court if you feel you have been ripped off. Make sure you take your other mechanics as witnesses. Getting a lawyer over 700 dollars isn't worth it. Sounds to me like you have a strong case.

From now on, anytime you have parts changed on your car, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ask to have the old parts back. This will assure you that the parts have been changed.Auto mechanic rip off...help.?It certainly sounds a little odd. Using an oversized plug will in no way stop a leak in an oil pan gasket. As far as a lawyer, I think that the cost of the lawyer, and the time involved for yourself might be more trouble than it's worth. Has anyone been able to tell you at this point what this leak is? It would be interesting to find out.Auto mechanic rip off...help.?If that was recent, take it back, most work at any decent shop will have something like 6mo/6k mi warranty on their work, it will say on the paperwork you signed. If its still covered (longer than 6 mo/6k)... tell them its leaking again, fix it. Funny though, I have an 89 Legend (great choice in cars btw) and the plug, unless cross threaded (prob by them) should never leak. My legend has had the oil changed about every 2k mi and its up to 340k, thats roughly 170 times....no problem here... I cant believe they would suggest a larger olug in the first place. Anyways. If they didnt put on a new one, take pictures, you could take them to small claims court. Besides that, you should ask what the other shops would charge to change it.... its a pretty easy job when its on a lift.... drain the oil, pull the pan and seal, install reverse...add oil and your good.....Auto mechanic rip off...help.?i would go back to them n ask them to fix it or write them a letter saying that u acknowledge that the oil pan has not been replace n being inspected by 2 other mechanic shop and ask for refund the money of the work they did . if no response i would take them to a small claim court and settle there with all the evidence u haveAuto mechanic rip off...help.?Your drain plug was probably stripped out from over tightening. Honda/Acuras are famous for being prone to this problem. The only way to fix it right is to replace the pan or repair (weld nut on inside) the pan. Either way the pan has to be removed. I do think the costs seem high. You should check the rates from an Acura dealer. They can look it up in a book. If you were over charged, take them to small claims. Judges don't like crooks. BTW. quick change oil places are known to over tighten and strip drain plugs. The proper method is to use a torque wrench and the replace the crush washer ($0.25) every time the plug is removed.Auto mechanic rip off...help.?Well not really be worth it but you need to let him know you caught him and tell him your going to turn him in not only to the better business bureau but the certifiecating office for mechanics they will yank his licenseAuto mechanic rip off...help.?Time is a factor with this. If it has been too long or no cooperation with the mechanic, report it to anybody that will listen, Better Business Bureau, Media, Law Enforcement(fraud), Ministry of Transportation, etc. Make sure you have all paper work to back your story and even statements from the other mechanics.

How do you change the auto transmission fluid in a 97 chrysler cirrus v6?

I just bought a 97 chrysler cirrus v6 thats in good shape and I want to keep it that way! I changed oil, checked battery acid level and was going to change auto transmition fluid. For now I was just going to change auto trans fluid %26quot;not filter%26quot; though I already have a new filter/gasket. For the life of me I couldent find a drain plug! I would have thought it would have been on the lowest part of the trans fluid pan! I looked everywhere, and found nothing! I had someone tell me you had to remove the trans pan to drain the fluid. I looked on the internet, this seems to be true. If so, how the hell do I catch the fluid on pan removel without makeing a huge mess? Seemes verry silly, but I gotta do it! Somebody please tell me how to do this in the most efficiant/least mess kind of way! Thank you!How do you change the auto transmission fluid in a 97 chrysler cirrus v6?You probably have to drop the pan unless you pump it from the fill hole.

At least if you go through all the trouble make sure you refill with a good quality AMSOIL transmission fluid.

  • Crankshaft seal???

i have a 199 honda civic EX and its leaking oil and i changed my oil pan and its gasket but it is stillleaking oil, and i was thinking on the crankshaft seal where the clutch is?? is it hard to change it?? how do i change it???Crankshaft seal???the rear crankshaft oil seal is in two pieces. you replaced the lower, when you dropped the pan. you forgot to replace the upper sael. from this old mechanic, there is a tool, called japanese fingers, they hook on the old seal, and then, if your good, you pull on the jap fingers, and the old sealwill come rright out. then slide the jap. finger up, and around the upper crank cap and hook the new seal on , and pull it through, and seal the ends good with permatex's, and put the pan back up. let the car set over night, do not start the engine, so the new seal will set up and seal the pan. next morningn start the engune, and a way you go.Crankshaft seal???If the rear main seal is leaking, there's a reason. It's almost for sure a worn rear main bearing, which might come from a scored crank journal. If you take down the oil pan, remove the rear main cap and look at the bearing, then you'll know. You were only one step away.Crankshaft seal???At the front of the engine, where the timing belt is located. You have two seals, the cam and the crank and both are relatively easy to change, it does require the removal of the timing belt and the drive gears to accomplish this. The rear main would require the transmission to be removed. I hope for your sake it is the front seal. The cam and crank are the most common to leak.

How much money will it cost..rouch estimate anyways..to get my car fixed?

I just took it into the shop and asked them to give me an estimate on my car, no call back yet, i hope they dont start working on it until i know because otherwise if its more than the car is worth i would rather just junk it. I have all the parts excepts for lifters in the engine. They have to change an oil pan and put a gasket on there. I assume if they have to change the lifters they need to change the gaskets involving that too. Any idea how much roughly i should be thinkin about paying..they charge 48$ an hour for labor and i have the parts except the lifters, gaskets and what not.How much money will it cost..rouch estimate anyways..to get my car fixed?all depends on the vehicle..some engines almost have to be removed to install pan gaskets. Depending on what %26quot;gaskets%26quot; you are replacing..2-6 hours ?!?!How much money will it cost..rouch estimate anyways..to get my car fixed?sounds like ur confused...why change lifters if gasget is bad...if lifters r bad u should change cam tooand put on timing belt/chain while its apart...hay...ur right...junk it...

WOW i need a motorcycle expert why?

so i open the oil pan to change the oil of a motorcycle and i see a LOOOTS of gasoline coming out of it.. like 1 galon!..

any reason for it? .. ..

is there any chance to have that much gasoline inside?? this bike was changed the oil few weeks ago i just opened it again just to chekc and all this gasoline comes out!!

(honda cbr600f2 1993)WOW i need a motorcycle expert why?You left the gas petcock on and your carb float valve failed to seal [leaked] gas ran out of the tank, through the carb, into the cylinder and drained into the pan. Older BMW by chance? I's happend to a lot of people who plunb fergot to shut the gas valve off.WOW i need a motorcycle expert why?Your carburetors are flooded. The floats are stuck in the open position. This happens a lot on older bikes. jbWOW i need a motorcycle expert why?One or more of the carburetors is flooding. The float is stuck, or the seal that the valve on the float closes is cracked/damaged. This means that one or more of the carburetors are over-filling with fuel and it isn't running out of the overflow tube to the ground. Instead, the fuel is going down the intake and into a cylinder, where it leaks past the piston rings and floods the crankcase with fuel.

Pull the carbs and inspect them, and fix the issue. It may only be one carb, or it could be more.

In the mean time, as a short term solution; drain and refill the motor oil. When you shut off the bike, turn the petcock to OFF (left hand side of the bike near the rear of the tank). You still need to get the carb(s) taken care of.WOW i need a motorcycle expert why?Don't listen to Bart.

He thinks he's an expert because he reads bike magazines (his words).

In reality, he doesn't know jack.

The 87 Ford F150 is a 2WD 4.9L in-line 6 manuel trans with dual tank. I changed the oil and oil filter, replaced the wiper motor with used part (mine was slow and stopping), new wipers, replaced the power booster with used part (mine had vacuum leak)(also this one is a little bigger then old one was), replaced bad seal in RR axle and added new gear oil, replaced 90% of brake lines because of rusty and broke when bleeding brakes (all clean brake Fluid now in lines), replaced center drag link (mine was egged and loose steering), replaced seals in steering for leaking, and added clamps to leaf springs (old ones broke or missing). I am not sure what else is need to do a tune up. I see and know of new spark plug wires and dis. cap. New starter and starter solenoid. The truck is running rich with black spitting out exhaust pipe. Have to change the valve cover gasket because of leaking oil as well as oil pan gasket. For oil pan gasket can i use the liquid gasket on it or buy a gasket? Please help me with my truck. How do i test the EGR valve also? Thank you!!I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?try to check it out first on auto repair shop..I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?I think you may have spent more than the truck is worth, but I think I can help with the brake light problem.

The switch for the brake light is inside near the top of the pedal. As the pedal is mashed, the switch contact makes and the lights come on. there is normally an adjusting nut to set the plunger closer to the pedal in full released position. you need to adjust so that there is about the double distance of a matchbook cover between the plunger and the pedal. This should allow the lights to come on as soon as any pressure is placed on the pedal.I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?sounds like a vaccuum leak causing the richness and that produces the black smoke. check power booster for leaks or disconnected line.

have someone press brakes while you listen near booster for sounds of air leak. if no check other vaccuum lines by carefully spraying carb cleaner on all lines and if you hear a change in engine idle while doing this then the leak is in that area.

    also adjust brake light switch.

Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?

My tenant has some old oil in an oil pan in the garage duplex. Looks like he is using the garage to change the cars oil and work on his car in the garage.

Isn't this dangerous to have old oil in the garage like that and also work on his car in the garage in a nice neighborhood? How would I write a letter to him to address this or how do you handle this situation?Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?I'd call the local Pep Boys and ask them how much they would charge to dispose of it.Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?the niceness of the neighborhood does not affect the dangerousness of the oil change.

As long as the oil isn't near any open flames or things that get hot it should be fine.Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?Well as the landlord you need to address it immediately, it seems like you live in a condo community or duplex; check out the HOA regulations, my HOA states that you can not work on your cars in the garages or on HOA property. Remember that it is your property and you need to let him know what you expect. Best of luck.Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?Just make sure he recycles that oil properly %26amp; doesn't pour it down the sewer! I would do what the previous poster stated %26amp; notify him in writing that this activity is not allowed on the premises....and you should add this to your lease for the future.Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?I wouldn't know how to change the oil, but my dad changed the oil in all of our cars in the drive way and so did most of our neighbors in a very nice area. As long as he cleans up, I don't see a problem, unless the HOA or municipality doesn't allow it.

If you don't want him to store the old oil or something else like gasoline or kerosene or bbq igniter, tell him. Tell him you're concerned about safety and that oil and such can mar the floor. My mother-in-law had a tenant who drug his motorcycle into the living room to work on it. He didn't last long, but long enough to ruin the carpet and subfloor.Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?Sorry, If this was not addressed in the lease you can't stop him from working on his car in his garage unless it violates a local ordinance. If it does you can have the town or village address the problem with a fine. As for the motor oil..just ask your tenant not to leave it around.. to container it , cap it and give to a local gas station or repair shop. Most repair shops in my area are glad to take old motor oil that is not contaminated with any other substances because they us it in their recycled oil heater.

Hope this helpsTenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?People have been working on their own cars in their own garages for 100 years or more. Most of those garages are still standing today. Some of them are even in nice neighborhoods.

Used motor oil isn't any kind of a fire hazard -- it's only an environmental hazard if it's not disposed of properly. It's just *oil*.

Next time you talk to him, you could remind him to make sure he disposes of the used oil properly. Other than that, I don't see that there's any need to %26quot;address%26quot; this issue at all.Tenant Has Old Motor Oil In Garage?First of all: being in a nice neighborhood has NOTHING to do with any of this!

He has to work on the car someplace. Would you rather he do it in the driveway or in the yard?

The oil being out like that can be a fire hazard. Just send him a friendly note requesting that he keep the garage clean and free of hazards. Anything more is just being snooty!
