Welding hammer lodged into oil pan and ruined motor. How do I fix it?

I have a Camry. I bought it 36 days ago and it broke down today. The man I bought it from towed it off and said he found a welding hammer sticking out of my oil pan and it ruined the entire motor. He said I must have run over it and it flew up, puncturing the oil pan, which drained the oil and ruined the motor. He changed my oil last and has done a majority of the work. Is it really possible that I ran over it, it drained the oil, and ruined my motor?

I looked under the car after I pulled over, the only thing I saw was the air conditioning dripping. There was no oil anywhere. I also looked under the hood and saw nothing.. just some white smoke. The man called me and said there was oil everywhere and on the road but I was sitting by my car for 20 min until my ride came. Before I left I looked it over too and still saw no oil, also, the smoke stopped a few seconds after I pulled over. I went back where I broke down and I couldn't find any oil on the road either.

I had a mechanic look at the car today and he said the man is a liar because it's not possible for that to happen, and if it somehow did happen, the things he showed me to prove what had happened would be different. The oil splatter would be all over and the hammer hole would not be a clean entry. Also it's a slim chance that it would have stayed in the pan. AND I would have noticed the hammer hanging when I looked under the car.

I am getting the car towed to a mechanic and I'll be taking pictures of everything. What is the best thing to do in this situation? And where is the best place to get a good affordable motor for an '02 Camry? Please Help!Welding hammer lodged into oil pan and ruined motor. How do I fix it?Wow - this is a tale right out of the twilight zone.

Yes, it's possible to puncture the oil pan by running over some shrapnel or even a welding hammer in the road - however, it's extremely unlikely that you could do this without hearing it.

It's also possible for the oil to drain out of the resulting hole in the pan - but, again, you would have to be asleep not to hear the engine rattling when the oil pressure fell to zero or see any indication of the oil leakage or warning lights or gages on the instrument panel.

All in all, I'd have to say that story is really reaching the limits of believability.Welding hammer lodged into oil pan and ruined motor. How do I fix it?definitely sounds like the dealer is taking you for a ride, you may want to file a complaint with the police, you saw no oil, the smoke was white indicating that it was probably coolant not oil, oil is bluish. Did you have any of warranty, if you did he probably doesnt want to honor it. Have the other mechanic inspect for foul play, if the oil was all drained this would have seized the engine .Welding hammer lodged into oil pan and ruined motor. How do I fix it?something sounds wrong for sure here, first off if a welding hammer hit your oil pan hard enough to go through it you would have heard the clunk second off you would have smelled oil burnining especially if you were there 20 minutes and you would have seen oil dripping from the hole, I agree that it probably wouldnt have been a clean hole, and the hammer would have had oil splatter on it. for sure take it to a mechanic and have them look it over, what was the reason for allowing the guy you got it from to tow it anyway? have it diagnosed by a real mechanic, its possible that you dont need a motor and very possible that the car had a serious problem when you bought it and now the guy is trying to cover his back.Welding hammer lodged into oil pan and ruined motor. How do I fix it?I guess anything is possible. If the oil drained out it would be quite a way back down the road before your engine seized up. It wouldn't lockup as soon as the hammer went in the pan. It could also make a clean hole because a welding hammer is very pointed. I guess all you can do is get all sides of the story and make your own mind up. It could be either way.

I have a 92 dodge dynasty and there is an oil leak problem. I checked the oil pan, changed the gasket, as well as the valve cover gasketts and the car is still leaking. I cant see oil anywhere from the top of the engine, only from underneath. I have no idea where it's coming from or how much it might cost me to get it fixed. does anyone have any ideas?Oil leak 92 dodge dynasty?if its leaking from between the engine and the transmission that's a rear main seal causing that too happen and that may be where its coming from, the only other thing left would be a head gasket, they will leak from the corner and cause that too happen, lay a piece of card board under it and run it and see where it leaks from ,if its between the engine and the transmission that's a rear main seal and the engine or transmission will have to come out to repair it,good luck.Oil leak 92 dodge dynasty?Could be a bad seal,Oil leak 92 dodge dynasty? Is there oil dripping between the engine and transmission? i have a 94 ford ranger 3.0 4x4 manual trans. was working perfect now all of a sudden went to intermitent oil pressure, then quickly to no pressure and now clacety clacking at top of motor at valve covers. all things lead to remove oil pan and look though concensus is clooged screen or bad pump. At $1100 to have pan taken off (because motor must be pulled) any ideas to try to clean screen through drain plug hole or some dissolving agent? All the fluids are perfect in color and level. • How to fix a small rust/crack/leak in my oil pan?

Just bought this 99 Taurus. I checked under it before I test drove it because I did not want a leaky car. I have a Cavalier with a rear seal leak but I have been putting off fixing it because it is going to be a lot of work/pain the butt. Just keep adding oil every couple of weeks. Anyways, I went to give it an oil change and I notice that there is quite a bit of oil on the pan bottom and some on the ground. I wiped it down and see that there is a leak right in the middle of the bottom of the oil pan. possibly a small rust crack. I have never seen that before. It does not look to be dented like something has struck it there. I noticed this after I had put the new oil in, so I have drained it and now I am looking for a fix. I have JB welded some things with good success. I actually did my sons quad engine case. The chain came off and knocked a hole in the case. I gobbed the JB on and around over about 4 coats to completely cover and fill it. Has held so far. So unless someone has a better suggestion I guess that is what I will try.

How long can a pan saver oil plug be used safely?

A while back the Walmart Lube Center stripped my oil pan and put a temporary plug in without telling me a thing about it. The next time I got my oil changed was at Super Lube- the mechanic there told me about it, took out the temp, and put in a pan saver. I have had that for like a year and just went to Tire Kingdom to get my oil changed again. They refused to do it because it's %26quot;against their policy%26quot; to touch a car with that kind of plug. When I went back to Super Lube, I was told that the pan saver was not a %26quot;temporary fix%26quot;, as the guy at Tire Kingdom said, but actually a permanent plug. He said it was just different from the threaded plug that was there before because the pan was stripped out.

Is this pan saver a real fix to save me the money of a new pan? If the pan saver does need to be replaced, can I safely take it out during an oil change and replace it with another one? I don't want to have to pay $400 to replace the oil pan but I am scared my car is going to eventually start leaking oil.How long can a pan saver oil plug be used safely?they can be used as a replacement. policy doesnt mean a thing, they just want to avoid a headache in the event of failure.its not gonna fail, as long as its reinstalled right.you can have a bung welded in and a new plug, but the engine can catch on fire if you do that without removing the pan.a good welder can do this, i know i can.

How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?

Big mistake accidently turned on the car after with no oil in it for about 2min, will this do any damage to my car... actually i was doing an oil change i put the oil in but forgot to put the oil pan bolt back.. so all the oil just leaked out while the car was on...

how much damage could this have done if it was only on for a couple minutes? How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?You should be OK. anytime you run something without oil, there is more wear and tear. The longer you run it the more wear occurs. Good thing you didn't drive it for 2 minutes because there is a lot more tension and therefore a lot more wear.

Bottom line... you did do some minor wear, but I would not worry about it. I would rather have my car sitting and idling for 2 minutes without oil than drive down the highway with only 2 or 3 quarts of oil.

To put things in perspective, there is already oil in between the piston rings. Those take about 5 minutes to leak out. That is where the most wear and tear is.How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?I read an article on this, one of the magazines tested an oil additive claim that after treatment, a car engine could be run even without oil. In the tests engines seized in 10-13 seconds without oil. The fact that your car still runs must mean you had some oil left in the pan while the car was running. How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?more than likely you lucked out since some oil would have remained in the engine. if the car seems to run fine, no knocking or misses, you probably didnt do any damage. if the car had run longer you would have run into some problems. How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?Your lucky you didn't drive down the road!

This shouldn't be a real bad thing.

Just as long you didn't rev up the engine. How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?If it still runs you are OK but I wouldn't recommend doing that again! How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?forget about it..no way to tell,,,but if its running ok,,,its ok..How bad is it to have no oil in engine for 2min?hopefully not much ...no way to tell.......

Good luck and ride safe. How Do I Change My Oil On My Motorcycle?heh, funny you should ask, I just changed the oil on my bike last night.

    1) Go to an online parts dealer, Ronayers.com, mineolamoto.com, etc. Locate your particular make and model in the online fiche. Find the oil filter, for my bike it was located on the Oil Pan diagram.

    2) Print that out.

    3) Highlight the price of an oil filter.

    4) Go to your local Yamaha dealer. If your local dealer has a website, print out the oil filter diagram there.

    5) Walk up to the parts counter, and ask for an oil filter for your bike. The parts guy will hand it over and tell you it's $13.

    6) Ask him why the website says the price is $8, and if he'll sell it to you for $8.

    * Last night at the parts counter, the guy charged me $13, which I thought was excessive, so I went to their very own website, and the price is listed in there as $8.22. I'm going to call them in a little bit and complain.

    7) Go to Wal Mart or auto parts store. Buy 1 gallon of Shell Rotella 15w40 oil, a funnel, some mechanics hand cleaner, and a roll of paper towels. A catch (drain) pan, and oil filter wrench are helpful, but not required. Bring the replacement filter in to find the correct size filter wrench, if you decide to get one. This stuff will usually be cheaper at Wal Mart. Buy some sockets too, if you don't already have them.

    8) Go home. Find the oil plug. This will be a bolt (usually 13/16%26quot;) on the bottom of the oil pan. That's going to be at the bottom of the engine. If you're having trouble finding the exact location of the plug, go back to one of those online parts fiches. You can find it there.

    9) Find some sort of basin or container that has a minimum capacity of 1 gallon.

    10) Put that under the oil pan. If you got that drain pan, use that.

    11) Take the drain plug off.

    12) Try not to drop it in the drain pan.

    13) Look at it. There'll be a magnet on the top of the part that was in the oil pan. That will have tiny metal shavings and metal dust on it. Wipe it clean on a paper towel.

    14) When the oil draining slows, get on the bike and rock it back and forth.

    15) Put the plug back in when there's no more oil coiming out.

    16) Take out the new filter.

    17) Look at it.

    18) Look around your bike and find the filter thats on there already.

    19) Put the catch (drain) pan under the filter.

    20) Take it off.

    21) Dump out the oil that's in there into the catch pan.

    22) If you managed to get that filter off without having it covered in oil, put it in the box the replacement filter came in. Otherwise, put it in a plastic supermarket bag first.

    23) Find out how much oil you're supposed to put in. This will usually be between 3 and 4 quarts.

    24) Find the fill cap, usually located on the right hand side of the bike, on the transmission.

    25) Take off the cap.

    26) Put the funnel in.

    27) Fill it up with oil. Don't overfill.

    28) Take the used oil and filter down to jiffy lube or a mechanics shop. They're required by law in NY state to take used oil from anyone.

    29) Go drink a beer.

Any questions? Type them into google.com.How Do I Change My Oil On My Motorcycle?lol... well, since it's your first time and it's due just get the oil and filter from the dealer. Download or buy the manual for your bike. put an oil pan under the bike, take out the oil plug(17mm), take off the oil filter, rub some fresh oil around the lip of the new filter, put it on, put the drain plug back in torqued to spec. Fill with oil to spec.

otherwise it will take a longgggggggg time to drainHow Do I Change My Oil On My Motorcycle?I agree with most of %26quot;supafly%26quot; but would only put in the exact type of oil that is recommended in the maintenance manual (should have come with bike). I buy Valvoline motorcycle oil from Kragen. You're not supposed to use car oil for the Suzuki Bandit I own.

Also, drive bike beforehand to heat oil. But make sure you don't burn yourself on hot parts. It's easier to take off the oil filter off when it cools a bit (make sure there's a pan underneath to catch the oil from this as well.) Pour used oil into old plastic milk jugs or other transparent bottle, use funnel to get oil into container (cut off 2-Liter bottle as funnel) Take used motor oil to autoparts store like Kragen (call beforehand to find out if they accept it - there should be no charge). Keep paper towels handy for cleanup.

Good luck. You'll know it was done right if you do it yourself.

How can you clean up an oil spill?

My husband decided it would be a great money saving idea to change his own oil in his car, but ended up tipping over the oil pan, spilling motor oil all over the street and sidewalk. How to change a 1984 fords oil pan?

Ford publishes shop manuals for all of their cars that you can buy.

There is usually a form in the owner's manual that you can fill out and send your payment to Ford.

This gives you the procedures for all maintenance on your Ford vehicle. How to change a 1984 fords oil pan?annorax24 is right

    Thats the best

But if you struck the oil pan with oil strain then my suggestion is keep playing with this it will come off.How to change a 1984 fords oil pan?I'm not sure why you want to change it. Is it because it is leaking through rust holes (I had that problem with my 1991 Ford)?

I fiber glassed it. First I used a wire brush in a drill and scrapped all the paint off where the rust holes were. Then I used a junk paint brush to put the resin on the pan, then I put the cloth over the resin and slopped more resin on the cloth.

It worked fine for a year but then the fiberglass came loose. I determined that the hot oil was too much for the resin so I got some body filler that said it resisted oil. I put little dabs over each rust hole. Then I repeated the fiberglass process. It lasted until I sold it 4 years later.

Of course if that isn't your problem, sorry for wasting your time.

Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?

My oil pan thread is stripped. I'm wondering if buying a new pan is my only option. Can I just get a oversized self tapping drain plug? If so...how well does that work? Is it something that is going to need to be changed everyone oil change?

Or can I just bring it to a shop to get the thread repaired (Going one size up?) ? How much would that cost?

What would be the best thing to do?Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one? There are thread repair kits on the market that are quite good. Most auto parts stores sell them. It would be best to have a shop do it as without a lift it's hard to do. Basically you tap the hole oversize and then thread the insert in with the new threads of the correct size for your drain plug.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?Retap and get a bigger plug.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?Oversized drain plugs and rubber butterfly type plugs are temporary fixes only.

    They all leak eventually.

There normally isn't enough material in an oil pan to tap new threads. You can try, but

The pan will most likely have to be replaced.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?If it's just the plug that's stripped then yes...don't replace the pan. Just rethread the plug hole and add a strong gasket to the plug AND add high temp gasket sealer to the plug[recommended] (don't get it in the crank case but don't worry it comes off easily with a socket wrench). Temporary fix but it should hold.Stripped oil pan? Do I HAVE to get a new one?You can re tap it and put in a larger plug. Or you can install a hela coil which is a sleeve that has threads already in it. Re tapping it may be easier. Make sure the oil pan is completely drained.

When I have too many items to pan-fry in the pan at once, I fry in batches. However, the oil and pan get too dirty and the latter batches come out blackened. Is there a way to avoid this without having to change out the oil completely and clean the pan between batches? When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?Just don't let the little crumbly bits that stick to the pan burn. If you have the time, let the pan cool a little and get them out with a paper towel. As long as you don't have any burnt food in the pan, the rest of the food shouldn't burn.

Also, it depends on what type of oil you are using. Olive oil has a very low smoking point and must be changed each time (that's why you should never season cast iron with olive oil). Vegetable oil and Canola oil have higher smoking points so you can reuse them more often, but they aren't as aromatic or flavorful as olive oil. I think that peanut oil has one of the highest smoking points. So if you really have to fry a lot, choose peanut oil. Otherwise, stick to veg or canola oil and you should be able to fry repeatedly. When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?no. you need to change the oil in between. When I pan-fry multiple batches of food, the oil and pan get dirty. How do I keep it clean for more food?Look, the easiest to do is just between batches....turn on the hot water...get it really hot....rinse the pan...do not scrub or wipe...and start new. It is as simple as that. I do that to keep my stuff from looking black too. Especially pancakes, pork chops...etc... It doesn't matter what you use to cook with...oil or butter or crisco. works just the same...saves time and it keeps your pan hot and seasoned for the nect batch. Good Luck

    Leaking Oil pan gasket?

Went for an oil change and they told me my oil pan gasket is leaking. How much would this type of repair generally cost?

What is the cheapest method of getting it fxed.

I'm sure I've seen stuff that you can just add to your oil to stop leaks, or am I wrong??Leaking Oil pan gasket?try tightening the pan bolts first and see if that stops the leak and if it doesn't you will have to replace the gasket and usually it can be replaced by raising the engine a little so you can get at the bolts and get the pan down and put a new gasket on it, the stuff you add to the oil to stop a leak won't work, save your money.Leaking Oil pan gasket?change the gasket... it souldn't be too much.... If a Mechanic was to do it It'd prolly cost 100.00 (depending on Labor rates)Leaking Oil pan gasket?Hi, Usually just loose bolts around the pan. Sometimes you can just snug up the bolts around the pan to stop a leak. You'll feel, when tightening them. How loose they are. They do not need to be cranked down so hard as to snap them off. More problems then. Around 10-15 lbs of tork. I use a socket wrench, held close to the head. Not the end of the wrench. To tighten. Can't put too much tork to it that way. Stop leak in a bottle isn't the way to go. You don't list the car %26amp; engine you have. Otherwise I could of got more specific. Go to www.autozone.com, put in your cars info %26amp; chose repair info, specs. DaveLeaking Oil pan gasket? The surest fix for your problem is a new oil pan drain bolt form the dealer of your auto. It'll have a new gasket already installed. Too many times aftermarket oil pan drain bolts have inadequate sealing washers and will not mate to the oil pan's opening taper. The flange bolts have seal gaskets that are made of copper or a very hard grade of nylon.

Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?

My dad taught me how to change the oil on my 02 liberty I just want to make sure on this wrangler that I don't unscrew the wrong bolt. Thanks in advanced for any help if some one had a picture that would be awesome!Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?Well the oil pan is on the bottom of the engine, and the bolt is on the very bottom of the pan.

Here's a picture, and you can somewhat make out the bolt.

    http://image.fourwheeler.com/f/9084556+w

You can use either type of wrench, though using a socket will reduce the chance of rounding the bolt head.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?Go to the passenger side of the jeep, from behind the front tire if you look directly under the engine you will see a black pan with a bolt plug on the side of the pan toward the bottom of the side. If you find it and you aren't sure if you really have it, the muffler pipe and then the oil filter are pretty much on top of it. When you change your filter excess oil usually spills from it and you don't even have to move you're oil bucket cause it's right over where the plug is anyway, just wipe the oil of the muffler or it'll burn and smell.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler? The oil drain plug is shown in the write up here. The write up is for a newer model 4.0L that doesn't have a distributor cap like the older 4.0L.

    http://www.jeepz.com/forum/engine/21699-

You can use an adjustable as the drain shouldn't be fitted too tightly. I normally use a ring spanner, 5/8 inch I think it is.

One thing I must comment on is step 5 where it says about removing the oil filler cap. The oil filler cap on TJs can be stubborn to remove when the engine is hot and can break in two leaving the threaded part in the rocker cover. You then need to use grips to hold and turn the threaded section of cap out.

What I'd do is loosen the filler cap when the engine is cold and turn it back on so it just stops before warming the engine. It will come off easily then after the engine is warmed up.

I learnt this AFTER breaking the cap on my 97 TJ.

When fitting a new oil filter instead of using a little oil to wet the seal I use a little grease smeared over the seal. I find it makes the filters easier to remove at oil changes.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler?most every oil pan plug will be on the bottom of all oil pans, and there won't be any other bolts there.

think about it . when changing the oil, all the oil has to come (drain) to the bottom of the pan. if it didn't you would always be letting some dirty oil remain in the engine. always make sure the oil is hot before you drain it. more will come out when it's hot. don't forget to replace the oil filter every time you change your oil. usually 3,000 to 4,000 miles.you'll want to get what they call an oil filter wrench for that. when you buy the oil and filter ask about the wrench. shouldn't be over $5.00 i believe for the wrench.Where is oil pan/oil plug on 97 jeep wrangler? There is only 1 bolt in the general area on a TJ but on my CJ the transmission drain plug is about 4 inches away.

Coil came out with oil plug when I did oil change. I have a 2000 mustang?

When I was changing the oil on my 2000 mustang a coil was attached to oil plug. When I tried to put plug back in oil pan with the coil attached it wouldn't stay and now I can't put oil in my car. I have a 2000 ford mustang 6 cylinder. If you guys could tell me how to fix this and what exactly is wrong I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for readingCoil came out with oil plug when I did oil change. I have a 2000 mustang?Sounds like someone stripped the threads and used a heli-coil to fix it. You are going to have to get the heli-coil off the old plug and get a new heli-coil to carefully repair it.

It that doesn't work, you need a new oil pan and if you do that change the screen on the oil pump.

How can i stop the leak in my oil pan in my civic 93?

there's a leak in the oil pan of my 93 civic ex, and its not the oil pan gasket, i think the pan strip because i put in a size bigger nut to stop it and it only did for that one time and now that i changed the oil again it started to leak once again, and so is there like a seal that i can put on the nut thing, like would a threadlocker jell work?? without replacing the pan?How can i stop the leak in my oil pan in my civic 93?have you replaced the drain bolt washer on the plug that you put into the oil pan before you refilled the engine with oil? If you don't replace the drain bolt washer when you change the oil you will get a leak from the drain bolt.

if you've already tried to jam a larger bolt into the drain bolt hole then you've probably damaged the threads and have oil leaking through the thread. Other than replacing the oil pan, which you'll probably have to do if that is the case, the only other thing to try is a product like %26quot;lock-tite%26quot; to seal the threads.

it might work but I wouldn't be too optimistic. You could try an epoxy but you'd probably never get the bolt out again.

again, start with the obvious and replace the drain plug washer if you've not changed it. You may find that is the cause of your leak.

    hope that helps

How do I get a "quick lube shop" to repair an oil leak I suspect they caused?

Short story: I think a quick lube shop stripped my oil pan after an oil change, and now I want them to replace the pan on their own dime. They're currently giving me the run-around.

    Long story:

In early August, I went to one of those quick lube shops (like EZ Lube or Jiffy Lube) for an oil change. This was on a Friday. The following Monday, I noticed a puddle of oil underneath my car.

I brought my car back to the same shop and told them that I suspected they caused the oil leak. According to them, the cause of the leak was a stripped oil pan caused by typical wear and tear. However, for no charge, they said they'd re-strip the oil pan for me.

After they supposedly re-stripped the oil pan, I brought my car to two other mechanics to get their opinion of the oil leak. Both concurred that the oil pan was stripped, but it wasn't because of wear and tear - it was because someone applied too much torque when reapplying the plug.

In addition, I found out that the folks at the quick lube shop %26quot;fixed%26quot; the oil leak by applying silicon to the plug. One of the mechanics said that the silicon is a temporary patch that may last me months, years, or just days. The car would start to leak oil again sooner or later, and replacing the oil pan is the only permanent fix. The estimated cost to replace my oil pan is about $500.

I now want this quick lube shop to give me the name of one of their %26quot;associated mechanics%26quot; and replace my oil pan for me at no additional charge. When I asked the shop's manager to give me a list of names of %26quot;associated mechanics%26quot;, he gave me the run-around: I'd have to fill a claim, I'd have to bring the car back to the shop so he personally can inspect it and ensure that it was, indeed, his workers' fault that the oil pan was stripped...

How good are my chances? What steps can I expect to take? Should I talk with the manager of the shop, or go up the chain to their corporate customer service? Or should I just pony up the $500 myself and forget about this?

Thanks in advance for any information. How do I get a %26quot;quick lube shop%26quot; to repair an oil leak I suspect they caused? To begin with the %26quot;Stripped pan bolt%26quot; is an old trick. I have no doubt that it is stripped as I have had two Quick lube places %26quot;Discover%26quot; stripped pan bolts on two of my own vehicles. (I used to build Funny Car Engines so I am fairly adept at vehicle maintenance) Normally they pull this scam when my wife (who is more mechanically inclined than most lube shop jockeys) takes the car in. Normally they approach with it was like that before we did anything....... My wife has taken the approach that she tells them that I am a mechanic up front and that has stopped the BS. Now on to your delima. Most of the auto parts stores like Autozone or Advance etc. carry a tool to rethread the oilpan drain plug. I would also recommend that you demand to the corporate customer service reps. that they %26quot;PAY FOR%26quot; your vehicle to be repaired however I would not allow them to make the repair themselves. The kit to rethread the oil pan is between 15 and 30 dollars and they will probably want to say it costs 50 - 100 or more and with your current experience do you really want them %26quot;inside%26quot; of your engine. We have had good luck pressuring the Corporate people to make amends more so than the clowns in the shops. By the way we now go to a %26quot;quicky lube%26quot; place that knows both me and my wife by name and they know that I will not take part in their scam. I have even had a Mr. Tire location try to pull the stripped drain bolt ..... until I walked up and put another pan bolt in the pan while they stood there with their mouth hanging open. How do I get a %26quot;quick lube shop%26quot; to repair an oil leak I suspect they caused?Keep on them, and don't let up. Get the mechanics you have taken it to to put their findings in writing. If the quick lube place continues to give you the run around, call a lawyer. Usually one letter from a lawyer is enough to get places like that to pony up. How do I get a %26quot;quick lube shop%26quot; to repair an oil leak I suspect they caused?Good question. First off, unless that was your first oil change, you dont have much of a case. The plug has been in and out plenty of times and the threads get weaker and weaker each oil change. If you were in my shop and that happened, I would have walked you out after we removed the drain plug and showed you the threads. In any case, for customer satisfaction, I would install a two piece self tapping drain plug. No way do you need to replace the pan. The two piece drain plug has one end that self threads into the pan and never comes out again, the other end has a small bolt that gets removed for future oil changes. We have used this alot and never had any problems. How do I get a %26quot;quick lube shop%26quot; to repair an oil leak I suspect they caused?very very good, contact there corporate office and ask to speak to a supervisor and state your case, Don't talk to a drone! talk to a supervisor, that work's 99% of the time if not what's your deductible on your insurance, I use AAA and if I filed a claim they'd be on them like a pit bull on a pork chop! I also have a 54 chevy that has the original drain plug and it doesn't leak, but then again I do my own service cause I don't trust morons working on any of my vehicles

How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?

I got a 1996 Toyota camry. I went to another place for an oil change and they found oil pan threads is pulled and drain plug threads is stripped. They suggested me to bring my car to a repair shop as soon as possible and also they said whoever did the oil change last time is the one responible for those damaged. However, I already moved to another town and it seems little impossible to ask for warranty because I can't bring it to the last shop to fix it. So I decide to bring my car to another repair shop to fix the problem.

If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?

This happen on my car when i was changing the oil the screw just broke off and fell in the pan... its a 1990 Olds Cutlass Supreme. any tips on how to pull it out other than pulling the whole engine out.... thanks. If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?Where did you break a screw from that it would fall into the oil pan? I can't see that happening unless you dropped it in the oil filler,

Some vehicles have a magnet on the drain plug, but most don't. If it is in the bottom of the oil pan, it probably won't hurt anything, but if you are not sure you can always pull the pan off and remove it. You can do that without pulling the motor in most cars.If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan? What screw can break with an oil change? Do you mean the drain plug bolt? This is a pretty heavy bolt to just break off. This question makes no sense to me, please give further details about what has happened, until then i would not attempt to start the engine, if the screw is lodge elsewhere other than in the pan, you could destroy the pistons or valves. Are you sure it is in the pan? If so, then you should be OK, and maybe if you install a magnetic drain plug, you may get lucky and catch it with the magnet.

good luck......If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?not sure how you broke a screw on an oil change, but i imagine it's actually in the cylinder head.try to dislodge it by pouring the drain oil back into the filler hole as fast as you can(dont use a funnel, it wont flow enough}.you need a screen of some sort over your catch pan to see if you got it. better yet,get a flexible magnetic probe and search the head that way before using the high volume oil techniqueIf the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?nothing bad should happen. The oil pickup tube that is connected to the oil pump has a screen and that won't let it get sucked up. Try a strong magnet and draw it toward the hole of the drain plug to remove the broken piece. Also, you can purchase a drain plug with a built in magnet for extra protection. If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?the oil pump pickup on the engine has a strainer, its not meant to clean the oil, but the holes in it are small enough that nothing can usually get through unless its the size of a grain of sand.If the screw falls in the oil pan is it bad or is there a magnet on the bottom of the pan?it would be very difficult for a screw to fall into the oil pan from the top of the motor pull the valve cover, use a magnetic pick up tool, but find that screw before you do anything else

  • Self tapping oil drain plug: How tight can I make it? Will they always leak?

I had one put in by Jiffy Lube two oil changes ago. It was fine for months (5000 miles). Then I had someone else change the oil. He said that these plugs are only good for about 5 changes, then I need a new oil pan. But since he changed it, I have spots on my driveway. Could it be he didn't tighten it enough, for fear of breaking something?

I recommend the Hyundai Brand Oil filter. They're like $6.00, but they're very high quality. The quality is better than the $10.00 Mobil 1 oil filter. On a website, someone cut a Hyundai Oil filter open and found that the materials inside are high quality.

I highly recommend the Hyundai Brand oil filter. I also recommend Castrol brand of oils if you use conventional type. Since your car is leaking, i recommend conventional oil.

How hard to change oil pump?

I have a 93 Suburban K1500 with 110,000 miles on a 350. Has low oil pressure and will knock when cold or at idle. Just started doing it, so I think I might be able to save it since the knock is not bad yet and goes away when oil pressure comes up a little. Is it simply a matter of draining the oil, dropping the pan and swapping out the pump? Will the 4wd be in the way?How hard to change oil pump?it sounds like your pickup screen on the oil pump is clogged up. you could have a flush done on the enging and see if that helps, but if you have to drop the oil pan to clean the pickup you might as well change the pump as well. all in all about 3 hours to change the pump. the 4 wheel drive does not add much more difficulty to the job.How hard to change oil pump?A two wheel drive would not be to bad, It is just has you stated. How long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?

It's a 2008 Mazda6. Is this something I'll be able to wait for at the dealer? Or should I drop it off for the day? Or is it a really big job that will require me to leave it overnight? It seems like it should be a small job, but someone told me they may have to pull the engine out to do it. Not sure if that's true or not. Any thoughts? How long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?I doubt they will have to pull the engine completely out of the car, but it is possible that it will have to be lifted up off the motor mounts to get working clearance between the oil pan and the frame.

If the mechanic doesn't run into other problems, the job should only take a couple of hours, but it's probably better to give them a full day so the shop can properly schedule and coordinate the mechanic's time. How long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?it shouldn't take long, i had don't some in less that 15 mins including torquing all the bolts, not sore if they will have to take out the motor fir a masda but wouldn't think so, Hope this helps :)How long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?Takes about 15mins and the engine doesn't have to be pulledHow long would it take to get the oil pan gasket changed in my car?for a mechanic who knows what he is doing, it will only take 20 minutes maximum to remove and install it back; that include filling the engine with oil.

Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?

1998 Toyota V6 with 150,000 miles had the oil light come on. No abnormal engine noises were heard while driving to repair facility. (or ever for that matter) Tests by mechanic concluded that the pump is failing at high temperatures. In the process of taking things apart, the mechanic found %26quot;aluminum and brass particles in the oil pan%26quot;.

Since the pan has never been removed before, is there a quantity of particles that would be expected?

Where would the brass particles come from?

    Recommendations?

Background: Car has been reasonably well maintained with routine oil changes at a Toytoa dealership.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?brass is bad can only come from bearings youre time with this engine is limited best bet is to have new bearings rolled in they can do this with oil pan off it mite give you a few more years good luckMetal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?metal particles in the oil pan are a big problem.if they move around your bottom end they will chew on everything. the right amount is nearly zero. now if its not too late you can try a magnetic oil drain plug to keep the stuff from circulating, and obviously make sure the oil pump is working.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?Send in an oil sample from your engine and the oil analysis results will tell you what's been wearing abnormally, if anything, in your engine. Switching to a full synthetic oil like Mobil One will reduce the engine wear and extend the life of the engine:

http://www.mobiloil.comMetal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?A handfull of small flakes are usually on my magnetic drain plug when I change the oil. The brass is from bearings, which is a bad sign. You have done major damage to your engine. If it still runs then drive keep driving it, but don't ever drive with the oil light on, EVER.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?oil pump is a positive displacement gear pump each gear spins on an axis the brass is from the bushings ...metal particles are not normal ...indication of metal to metal wear

my recommendation would be to flush the oil system..use cheap oil run it about a half hour and drain....refill with oil of choice I am assuming that they changed the pump and reinstalled the pan...right?...ask the shop if they use a lab for oil analysis if so ..your next 3 or 4 oil changes a sample should be sent to the lab results will tell you if you have anything else going on in there

How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?

Ok my daily driver is a 1993 Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4. It has 293,000 miles. My oil pressure is fine when I start it but after about 10 minutes it runs very low. I am going to replace the pump simply because, even though it might not be the main problem, I know it probably needs it anyway. Any suggestions would be great. Do I just need to remove the oil pan, or is there more to it? ThanksHow do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?I agree. 20-W50.

The oil pan needs a significant amount of clearance to be removed.

If yours is four wheel drive, it's going to be a real challenge. How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?Yes, you do have to remove the oil pan...if there isn't enough clearance between the pan and crossmember (at least 4 inches) the engine has to be lifted to give the necessary clearance. It's better to let a shop do it, they have the equipment to get it done right...How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?yea, you need to drop the oil pan and i think theres 2 or 4 bolts has to come out and the pump comes out, along with the pick-up screen.the pick-up tube pulls right out of the pump, but make sure the screen is straight down to the oil, when you install it in the other pump.make sure you fill the new pump with petroleum jelly, before you install it,so it wont be sucking air, then clean out the pan and use a new gasket and install the pan,and put new oil and filter in it,and your good to go.its not hard, just time consuming. How do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban? You can put all the pumps you want but it won't stop the thermal expansion on the main and rod bearings that get oiled from the pump first. your oil pressure switch is in the block at the top of the motor that gets oil pressure last, when the mains get hot all the oil pours out between the bearings and crankshaft causing a loss of pressure at the end of the oiling system. short of a rebuild, I would try a straight weight

oil like straight 40w or 50w depending on where you live and

what season of the year it is. straight weight oil stays thicker than milti viscosity oil and might help, and an oil change to try first is a lot easer than an oil pump changeHow do I change the oil pump on my 1993 Chevrolet 2500 Suburban?remove the oil pan and you should see it hanging there, unbolt it and install the new one, also it helps if you take the cover off the new pump so you can see the pump gears and put some grease in the gears and button it back up as this helps the pump pick up oil quicker on the first start-up.

How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?

I have a 1985 Trans am. Rebuilding the car, and tuning it up. I went to change the oil in the enigine, and someone had stipped the head of the drain plug? I have tried heating it with a propane tourch, and using vice scripts, and I just strip it more. Any suggestion? How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?I had the same problem with my truck and used a socket called gator-grip. It worked for me, not sure if it will for you. Even if it doesn't work for you it's pretty handy to have around. I've used mine a few times for other things. How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?Vise Grips should work nicely. Get a tool called and %26quot;easy out%26quot; Looks like a drill bit but the spiral is reverse so when you turn the bolt to go out the bit wants to dig deeper in the pilot hole you tapped. When you are ready to use the easy out bit use a hammer to seat it than go from there. Good luckHow do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?Get a small to medium chisel and hammer a notch in the edge of the stripped bolt. . Once you have the notch formed, stop and dull the point on the chisel so it won't cut a piece off, but the force will transmit into the bolt and loosen it. Hammer it counter clockwise and replace. How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?try using a pipe wrench on it. that should bring it, unless the threads are stripped. after you get it out, put a self tapping plug in it.How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?suggest that there is an adjustable socket on the market now that tightens around the head of the bolt as you unscrew the bolt. The harder you pull to loosen the plug, the more the socket grabs the head of the bolt. How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped?you can also TAP a 12 point socket over the damaged head and try using a ratchet to remove it. just dont get carried away with the hammer. How do I remove a oil pan plug when the head is stripped? Not that it applies to you, but it is wonderful how many times I have had to think carefully about which way to turn a nut or bolt when I am upside down under the car or under the hood. Vise grips of the right sort should do the job without any problem whatsoever. wondering if you are trying the right plug?

push comes to shove, get one of those gizmos that let you pump the old oil out via the dipstick tube.

How do I change the oil in a 1997 Geo Tracker 4 door?

I see s screw for what I believe is the oil pan about three-quarters of the way forward on the passenger side. I need to know if this is actually the oil pan. It is a short bolt that is opened with a square socket. The housing for the bolt is somewhat dome-shaped. I looked throughly for another bolt that may have been the oil pan, but could not find one. I'm trying to make sure I didn't drain the wrong fluid. How can I change the oil pump? I know how to get the oil pan off but the book states that you have to take off the flywheel too? But I never have changed a oil pump before.1994 Pontiac Firebird, How can I change the oil pump.?The reason the book says to remove the flywheel is because you will not be able to raise the engine high enough to remove the oil pan.If the transmission and flywheel are out of the way the pan will be able to be removed. You will either have to remove trans. and flywheel or remove engine1994 Pontiac Firebird, How can I change the oil pump.?If the book says you have to remove the flywheel, then either the transmission has to come out or the engine. Breaking an oil pan nut loose?

i've spent the last 20 minutes under my chevy blazer trying to break this nut loose and i can't get it at all. i spent like 60 bucks on supplies to get my oils changed so i can't just take it in and someone else do it. any ideas on how to bust it loose?Breaking an oil pan nut loose?1 have you striped it? try vise grips...make sure you get um just right,,,may take several tries

2 are you turning in correct direction ??? [righty,,tighty,,,,lefty,,,loosey]Breaking an oil pan nut loose? If you haven't stripped it then there are a couple things that you can do

    1) get a longer wrench, more length=more leverage.

    2) spray some WD-40 on it and let it soak a while and try again.

If you have stripped it I would use some channel locks to turn it.Breaking an oil pan nut loose?watch this video for your answer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRJGd3p2tcQ%26amp;feature=channel_pageBreaking an oil pan nut loose?Yup, it is frozen up and needs some penetrating lube or liquid wrench to unstick it. WD-40 does ok, but liquid wrench and penetrating lube is made to unstick tough bolts and unstick locks and other mechanical items.

Spray the stuff on and let soak in for about 10-20 minutes and then you should be able to turn it.

Also using a torque wrench is better than a regular wrench as it helps to avoid stripping the head of the bolt or from breaking it off.

If your bolt head is stripped then vice grips are best, but make sure you buy a new bolt or next time you change the oil, it will be really impossible to get it off again.

How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqu

How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a technique issue? I have

been taking my 2002 Hyundai (115,000 miles) to a dealership for oil changes over the past 6 years and am told stripping is a

normal occurrence with multiple oil changes. I now need a very expensive new oil pan. Help me understand what has happened. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniquNo this is not a normal occurrence. The dealership tightened the plug too tight and stripped it. You could retap the hole and use a bigger drain plug. Or retap the hole and try the same plug. Either way is cheaper than paying the same morons that stripped it to put in a new oil pan, which you dont need. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniquOne time I was told by an instant oil change place that the hole was stripped and they had gotten the bolt back in, but it would not be able to be taken out again, or if it could be taken out again it would be impossible to get it back in, and tried to get me to buy something expensive (I don't even remember if it was a bolt or what, but it was a lot). I took it somewhere else for the next oil change and they said nothing about it and I never again had a problem. At the time the car was about 20 years old and had endured regular oil changes. My next car lived to be 15, and my current car is 13, with regular oil changes and never a bolt stripping problem. One would hope a dealership would be a little less shady than an instant place but maybe they are making it up to to try and get your money, can you get a second opinion? How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqui would not concider it normal.

if it's stripped it's because it was either put in on an angle or tightened to much and stripped that way.

while it's never happened to me (because i have never taken it anywhere but home to be changed) i would think that the hole that's stripped could be enlarged and an enlarged bolt put into the new threads. ask around i do know that oil pans (for what ever reason i don't know) are excessively expensive. so expensive that I've seen repair shops ask if you want a used one instead. (not for me)

my car is now 15 years old and the oil is changed about every 3,000 miles has 140,000 miles and never once had a stripped bolt.

the places that have done that just don't want to take the blame for what's happened to yours.

I'd start taking it else where.

good luck to yaHow common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqutake it to the dealer that did all your oil changes.bring a receipt from your last oil change.they ruined your threads, probably by using an impact gun.because its faster.take a picture of buddy using an impact to tighten it if you can.charge them for any oil stains in your driveway. if they give you a hard time call(email) the c.e.o. of that make of car.you should never have to replace an oil pan because of oil changes .thats pure bull. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniquIt's very common. It's just like stripping the screw of any piece of furniture or item in your house. Mine's been stripped for at least a decade. Never bothered to change it. It leaks enough to leave ugly stains so I lay down cardboard in my garage, but it doesn't leak enough to cause much more concern than that. How common is it for the bolt in the oil pan to be stripped? Is this normal wear and tear issue or a techniqunot normal, there is a torque for the drain plug. try usu a 6 point socket or wrench to break it loose.

Take it to a shop and have it done correctly. It isn't that expensive. I wanted to change the oil on my 2005 ford focus zx4 but i cant find the oil drip pan can anyone tell me where? It would be called a drain plug. It is a large bolt on the back or bottom of the oil pan. If you do not know what the oil pan is PLEASE go to a mechanic.I wanted to change the oil on my 2005 ford focus zx4 but i cant find the oil drip pan can anyone tell me where? On the bottom of the engine...its just a bolt and isn't exactly rocket science. Get under the car and you should see it pretty easily. Warm the engine first then loosen it with a spanner then your fingers but push in as you loosen it. Then when it's undone pull it away quickly or you'll get a sleeve full of oil. Change the oil filter at the same time....if you can find it

I don't know what that means. Will it cost a lot to get those things patched up so they stop leaking? He said there was about 1/4 of oil left so he didn't give me an oil change; he said he would give it an hour before it was down to 1/4 again. I have no idea how this could've happened. I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?

im trying to do an oil change on my old school benz and, i stripped the nut that drains the oil. i tried those wrenches that they have at sears to remove stripped nuts, but they only stripped it more. any suggestions? please help, time is of the essence!I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?If there's anything left to grip get your hands on a small 8%26quot; Ridgid Brand pipe wrench or large Vice Grip pliers. If your lucky any auto parts store will have a replacement oil pan drain plug. A plug from your Benz dealer would be better. When you install the new plug bare in mind that the hex nowadays is always a metric size.

If all else fails center punch the pan bolt and drill a large hole in it and get your hands on the largest screw extractor you can and reverse it out. Thank the last SOB that over tightened your oil pan drain bolt.I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?Vicegrips. But if the bolt is stripped so badly that those damaged-bolt-removers can't get it off, I wouldn't put a lot of faith in vicegrips either. I think you're going to be looking at replacing the entire oil pan. You'll need to undo all the bolts that hold it to the engine and pull it off. With it being full of oil still, the job will be messy as hell. You'll need a new oil pan gasket as well when you put the new pan on.I stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?you can get a kit called a bolt extracter kit ive got a set never had any probsI stripped the nut to drain my oil pan. how to get it off?Vise grips are a life saver. You seem to be looking for an inexpensive way out or quick fix and if that is the case ...

If you can locate the leak and it is not huge, drain the oil, grab a tube of JB Weld, wire brush the area and apply the JB Weld to the area, allow it to dry, give it a quick spray with tremclad or any rust paint, replace your oil and you are laughing :)

This is a quick fix, and will not stop the corrosion from continuing but the JB Weld will outlast the rest of the pan :)

    OPTION 2: Replace the Pan

The most expensive oil pan for a 89 town car that I can find locally has a retail price of $90 complete with pan gasket and oil plug gasket.

If the repair shop needs more than 2 hours to install it, they need to buy themselves some proper equipment.

This talk of three and four hours is insane ... you only have to let the motor mounts go and raise the engine a few inches to give you the needed clearance to remove the pan.

On a normal car without obstructions, and in a shop environment with the proper tools and equipment, this is a 45-60 minute job at worst.

Releasing the motor mounts and raising the engine a few inches might take 30-40 minutes at worst and about 10 minutes to put them back in if you have a engine comparment lift.

That simply does not take 2 - 3 hours of additional time.

You should be able to have a new oil pan installed for $180 Best Case - $250 Worst Case89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?unfortunately, you might have to pull the motor out/drop the front crossbar to change it, depending on which end has the oil sump. You'd better check what goes with the job, but STOP putting oil on the road, you'll kill someone!!!!!!!89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?You can get a replacment pan from any wrecking yard for about 15 bucks. you can also get a new after market one from any autoparts store. As long as it's not a double sump pan it's pretty easy to change out. most shops should only charge around an hour of labor to do the job plus the cost of an oil change. if you picked up the pan your self, then paid someone to do it, you would be looking about 130 to 160 for the whole job. this should also include the price of the gasket for the oil pan. check out cartalk.com for reomened shops in your area. Maybe you could even take it to tom and ray there is Mass.. not sure how far you are from Cambridge.89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one? That car does have a double sump oil pan. The crossmember is not removable.

It is possible to replace the pan without completely removing the engine. The motor mounts are disconnected, the engine raised as far as possible. Then, a good mechanic can unbolt the oil pump and drop it into the pan. Then, the pan can be removed from the car.

Most shops will charge a lot more than 1 hour.

3 to 4 hours would be more like it.89 lincoln town car rusted oil pan/need a new one?double sump triple sump cant unbolt the cross member? who cares?.......changing your oil will not effect the oil loss from your pan...ford oil pans constantly rust in the late 80s and early 90s because of low quality metal...we understand u love your car but its time to let go....175,000 miles?..sell it and buy a new one...the price of this repair is to great...drive it or sell it but don't waste your hard earned money replacing that pan......we did one last month total bill for new pan $675.43 i tried to talk this guy out of this repair, but he wanted it done .....6 weeks later.....car had other unrelated issues and he decided to sell it......he could have saved 700.00 ...so think about it first

How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?

Our oil pan got stripped when we got an oil change and so we got a heli-coil put in but it's still leaking a bit. What's the best way to seal it? MIghty puddy, silicon...? How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?A liquid gasket, or a new drain plug. How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?Back to your original issue. Who ever changed the oil and stripped out the drain plug should have comprehensive insurance. I never in a thousand years would allow someone to install a heli-coil in the oil pan when it was still on the car. All it takes is one chip of steel to ruin an oil pump or get pumped through the oil system.

All you can do now is purchase a new factory drain plug. The threads do not seal the oil, its the tapered gasket under the hex flange. Some oil pan drain plugs have sealed O rings. Go to some local auto parts store or the dealer of your car and find the best drain plug with a gasket sealer at the top.
