What can I do to get a stripped oil pan plug off?

I was trying to unscrew the oil pan plug in my car to change the oil. I ended up stripping the damn thing. How can I get it off? What can I do to get a stripped oil pan plug off?um u sure ur turning it the right direction?....its counter clockwise...or to the left.....

put to get it off use a air gun...or vise-grips...or take a dremel tool and cut a slot in it so u can use a flat head screw driver.....

but when u get it off ur gonna have to b careful u didnt strip the pan....

jsut for referens most GMs take 18 ft pounds of torque on the drain plugs

sum fords only 10....hondas around 18-22....and jsut for reference u can put up to 100 ft pound of torque with just a wrench....most ppl over tighten the drain plug wich is wat leads to it stripping in the first place...good luckWhat can I do to get a stripped oil pan plug off?drill a hole in the sump plug and use a stud extractor to remove it

or weld a nut of the same size onto the stripped nut and use a socket to remove it.

These methods produce heat, to avoid the fire risk remove the oil pan and clean it out first.

These plugs are extremely tight and a flat head screwdriver wont do it.What can I do to get a stripped oil pan plug off?channel locksWhat can I do to get a stripped oil pan plug off?Try a vice grip, they have gotten me out of alot of jams. What can I do to get a stripped oil pan plug off?Vise Grips (Genuine, not imitation) otherwise get a screw extractor set ( 4 or 5 piece, from a well known name brand) start small and carefully drill recommended hole, pound in screw extractor and remove plug, if necessary work your way up in drill/extractor size combos. Centerpunch it and drill straight! You may need a right-angle drill motor if you are not up high enough on jack stands. Do not drill through plug completely if at all possible! Good Luck, you can do it... and always remember %26quot;Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty%26quot;.What can I do to get a stripped oil pan plug off?you mean the threads are stripped? if that,s what your saying then try to get the tip of a screwdriver under the head and try turning it with a wrench, it might catch thread. if it,s the head then use vice grips on it or a small pipe wrench.

  • How much is an oil pan?

I took my car in to get an oil change to a different place which is walmart they dont do maintenance they just do oil changes and they said they couldnt pull my pan out the last people to do my oil change was storeys automotive which they have diagnosed my car wrong numerous times and oviously must of screwed up my oil pan or a bolt how much is an oil pan? How much would this cost any suggestions what could be wrong? How much is an oil pan?depends on the yr. and model; call around. How much is an oil pan?It shouldn't matter to you how much it cost, because the place that screwed it up should be paying for it! But do NOT let them fix it.

You need to document when/where it was screwed up.

Then you go to a GOOD mechanic (dealer) and have it fixed. Ya, you gotta pay for it at this point.

Make copies of all your reciepts and papers, file small claims court against the place that screwed it up.How much is an oil pan?Ah yes the idiots at Walmart......

I manage a repair facility. Walmart used to send me cars whenever they had a problem that was %26quot;too big%26quot; for them.

They probably couldn't get the drain plug out because their idiots.

If it is a plug problem, you might not have to replace the pan just have it tapped and put in a new plug. (Aluminum pans are a different story). How much is an oil pan?The usual way oil change places ruin oil pans is to cross-thread the drain bolt when they put it back in. Hondas have a second problem - the threads in the pan are soft and wear even when changes are done properly (30 ft-lbs torque on the bolt). If the bolt is tightened without a torque wrench or a %26quot;torque stick%26quot; it is not uncommon for the threads to strip.

You don't mention make, model, or year, but replacing the oil pan is $200-$300 in most cars. Sometimes an over-sized bolt with self-tapping threads will be available as an alternative. How much is an oil pan?Why are they trying to pull your oil pan for an oil change?? You mean they cant get the drain plug off? If so it was probably over tightened and then stripped in the process of trying to remove...not sure what your problem is with the info you provided. Oil pans are different prices for all cars. Depends on the manufactuer, also what its made of..call your local dealership or parts supplier. How much is an oil pan?save yourself some money by taking it to someplace where they know what they are doing and have them get the plug out and use a self tapping plug that will make its own threads. How much is an oil pan?It sound as if the last place stripped out the threads for the oil drain plug. Go to an auto parts supply store and buy an oil plug repair kit. You can install it yourself. The kit comes with directions. Never let a garage change your oil if the wrench they use to remove the drain plug is over 6 inches long. The threads are too easily stripped when larger wrenches are used. How much is an oil pan? There are several different pans out there.Edelbrock make them, but insist on chrome plating them, which makes them expensive.Cheaper one's are made by Dorman Industries.Traditional steel, easily available (for most cars) and, direct OEM fit.Call your local Carquest Auto Parts store, they can get them easily.Usually, they are well under $100.Many people use salvage yard ones, however, you are taking a chance on buying someone elses problem.

2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak?

so from 1-10 (10 being the hardest) how hard is it to change an oil pan gasket leak on my camaro. i was told i had to lift the engine a few feet. ( so would i have to loosen the motor mounts or what?2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak?my best advice is to make damn sure it's the oil pan gasket and not the intake manifold gasket or something else up top leaking and running down the ends of the block. I just read the service manual procedures and it looks like for both the 3.8L and the 5.7L you pretty much have to drop the engine cradle down to access the oil pan. Not to mention that they use RTV sealant on both sides of the new oil pan gasket so chances are you are going to get RTV all over everything. And if you have any oil anywhere the RTV goes, it won't seal and you'll be doing it all over again. So make sure it's the oil pan gasket leaking. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give this an 8.2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak?Could be close to a 10. If you are lucky you can lift the engine maybe 12 inches or so. That would probably mean taking your exhaust loose and wires too in order not to break them. It would prefer just taking the engine out. That way you could do the job right the first time.2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak?autozone.com has a online repair manual with step by step instructions and diagrams to help you... it should not be hard if you follow directions2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak?Try to tighten each bolt uniformly slightly tighter. You could use a torque wrench. Then see how fast it still leaks. A slow leak may be acceptable.2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak? It's an oil pan gasket, it ain't rocket science !2000 camaro oil pan gasket leak?take it to masterstone and stop trying to fix it your damn self! just a suggestion

I have an oil change question * details in details box*?

the oil pan bolt is on really tight, damn gm dealership, and i cant get it off, im 15 and it wont budge. anyone no how to losen it and im using the right tool but it still wont budgeI have an oil change question * details in details box*?Hate to say it but there are two ways that you can take this off. If it is that tight, it sounds like it might be cross threaded. The first way would be to getting a impact driver and use that to get it off. Another way is to use a longer handled socket or put a cheater pipe on the wrench. When you do get it off, take a look at the threads and see if there is any damage that would indicate that it was cross threaded. If it was, the pan will have to be re-threaded and will need a new drain bolt. If you find damage to the plug, take the plug to the dealership and ask to speak to a service manager and explain what happened and they should repair it for you. If you are having this much of a problem removing it now, might be a good idea to take it back now and ask them to loosen it for you. That way if it was put in wrong and the threads are messed up, it is already there and they can fix it.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?You need what my old daddy called a cheater bar. You need to get a pipe or something similar to put over the wrench that makes it longer and gives you more leverage. MAKE SURE you are turning the bolt counter clockwise or you can twist the bolt right off.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?Take a small hammer and tap it lightly counterclockwise until you see it move enough to loosen it by hand.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?Put down your purse and just loose the oil plug. Double wrench it if you have to or use a socket and a breaker bar. Also make sure you are turning it in the right direction, and your not tightening the oil plug more.I have an oil change question * details in details box*?If you can't get it with a metric box-end wrench, go with something safer, bigger and better. A shallow well 1/2 metric socket with a 12%26quot; ratchet or a 16%26quot; breaker bar. It will pop right loose. You are turning the pan bolt counter clockwise as you face the head of the bolt?

Never use an open end wrench on %26quot;tuff%26quot; stuff.

Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?

When i got my oil change done..the guy said my oil pan has a hole in it the size of a pin hole. i have an 07 Pontiac G6. Im not even going to bother to bring it all the way to my dealer bc I know theyll try to blame me on doing it although I have hit NOTHING, i think it was done when my car had to get towed, the first week i bought it.

How much is it going to cost to replace the oil pan?? for i am a grad student and hoping it is not expensive.

thanks in advance :o)Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?I would say about $500. And also, don't be a line jumper. Cost of Replacing an oil Pan? Well that's not a cheap job at all it be about I bet 250 to 350 bucks at least.I'd be getting a dealership to look at it when possible bec it could be a factory mistake or faulty oil pan etc.

Was there any marks or dents or scrapes by the pin hole at all? If not it's likely its a factory fault and it's always had the pin hole but no one has noticed it.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if one dealership doesn't want to warranty repair and there is no obvious scrapes or dents etc call the head office up and complain or try different dealerships etc.Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?its going to cost you around 4-500 bucks to get that one replaced, and that's having it done through a local shop,id see about getting one through a dealer and then price out the labor through a local repair shop, good luck.Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?You might want to have a seat before you get the answer to your question. It will be in the 3 to 4 hundred range. This is a low guess, due to it being a newer G6.

You may find some one like me,That can repair it on the car. Need to know how to clean the boo boo very good.

I have done this many times, the pan is low.Made of soft aluminum. The up front position is going to be damaged.

Drain the oil and wait a day, then clean Patch with J-B WELD KWIK. Wait another day an your ready to replace the oil. If it leaks , You repeat until you cleaned it well enough for the weld to bond, which is the tricky part.

Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?how do you know its not a factory defect? most cars have metal or plastic oil pans and both could be repaired fairly easy if the hole is a pin hole size as you say. the metal pan could have a braze weld done and the plastic type could be treated with plastic weld both under 100 bucks the pan doesnt need replaced just repaired.Cost of Replacing an oil Pan?bbmak024,

You can buy an OEM oil pan from rockauto ranging $16.50 - $53 for an acdelco brand. Labor on the book is only 1.1 hours times the prevailing labor rate in your market so you should end up spending from $80 to $150 total + oil change. Or you can find a local home mechanic on craigslist, ask and call 2-3 of his references and pay him/her $25-40 for labor. It's a very easy job.

If you've changed the oil youself before, then you have enough skill to tackle this job on your own. There are 14 bolts to remove after you've drain the oil. Pry gently with a butter knife or wide flathead screwdriver to remove the old pan. Apply a light bead of gasket sealer to new pan and tighten the bolts by hand the first 2 complete turns before using a wrench. Just tighten evenly in opposing order then clockwise. Don't over tighten(25 ft lbs) , you don't want to strip the block. Complete the oil change.

How to remove a stripped oil pan bolt?

I was trying to change my oil this was my first time changing my oil since i bought a new motor for my car and it was hard to turn the bolt but i finally moved but i keep unscrewing it and saw that i was getting nowhere i was wondering how would i be able to remove the bolt out of the oil pan so i can continue changing my oil?How to remove a stripped oil pan bolt? One thing to try is clamping a large set of Vice Grips on the head of the drain plug and pull out while turning. Another is if there is room between the head of the drain plug, put as large a screwdriver that will fit between the plug and oil pan and apply pressure to the drain plug as you turn. Slow, but it does work most times. How to remove a stripped oil pan bolt?on this small engine car the plug had been screwed on too tight and the monkey grips started to do the same thing. the leverage needed for this is not available and these stock rams used for the time. The first attempt for this car was the toothed cresent wrentch which started t strip the bolt

How to remove a stripped oil pan bolt?sounds like you stripped the threads of the oil pan.

    is it just spinning now?

i would replace the oil pan for a permanrnt fix.

If that's not doable, you can get a bolt remover kit or a Gator Grip. How to remove a stripped oil pan bolt?RiV has the right idea..... but once you get the drain plug out, inspect the threads on the oil pan. If they are damaged, you can get a drain plug repair kit at your local auto parts store. It's an oversize plug that cuts new threads when you install it. Be careful not to cross-thread the plug.

  • 2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?

I did an oil change yesterday and accidentally stripped the oil pan or drain plug thread. It just kept turning and turning. I don't know which is actually stripped though. I have been reading of some plugs that strip instead of the oil pan... how do I tell if this is the case. I am worried that I will have to drop big buck on a new pan and hope this isn't the case. I know there are self-tapping plugs, too, but a lot of people claim they do not hold up well.2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?I believe you probably only stripped the plug not the pan, reason i think this is, on newer vehicles oil pans are made with a different material than the drain plugs. They are made with a stronger metal and the drain plug is typically an alluminum type alloy. This helps prevent you from having to replace a whole drain pan. You have a new enough model that Im 99% sure that you just need a new plug.2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?checke seans answer its the rite one2001 Camry -- How to tell if the oil pan threads or drain plug threads are stripped?Umm.. just take a look at the plug. How easy is it to Change an Oil Pump in a 80's 300zx turbo (z31)?

Ya, I figure my oil pump died... I have no lift or anything all I have is jacks, and what I was wondering is how hard is it to change the oil pump (ie take the oil pan and all the rigging underneath the car that is in the way) while only having the car up on jack stands (in the winter :( Or is it one of those jobs where taking the engine out is a more viable option? How easy is it to Change an Oil Pump in a 80's 300zx turbo (z31)?Depends on your mechanical ability, how much engine work have you done? If you can clearly remove the oil pan it shouldn't be to difficult. I would not pull the engine if you can avoid it. If you want to tackle it and your engine mileage is fairly low; by Nissan Standards less than 200K. I would get a Haynes or Chilton Manuel at the library if possible and check the procedures. You might be able to remove the lower cross-member and use a transmission jack to keep the engine in place while you drop the pan and remove the oil pump.

If you have a high mileage engine, you might be better off buying a crate motor. Japanese low-mileage crate motors are fairly cheap if you pay the freight from Japan. Try an internet to see what I mean.

    Good Luck!

How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?

I just went to my friendly local quicky oil change shop for a oil change today. I was told I can't get a oil change because apparently the oil drain pan was rusted out and the sludge from old oil help keep it seal. I was also told that the replacement for the oil drain pan would cost about $1,000. I love my old crappy car but I don't love it enough to save it with $1,000.

So the only reasonable course to take was to drive it to the ground.

    I have few questions though.

    1. Is it safe to not change oil(will the car blow up?)

    2. How long would my car last without changing oil ( I last changed about 9 months/3,000 miles ago)?

    3. are there any alternates to not changing oil/repair?

    Thanks for any helps!

p.s. for those curious I drove 95 Ford Aerostar. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change? The most universal answer to your question about how long a car will last is %26quot;it depends%26quot;. Oil change intervals in the U.S. have been categorized by how the vehicle is used (e.g. all highway miles down to a service vehicle in stop-and-go traffic) Engines need oil with good lubricant characteristics to keep moving parts operating and to protect them from getting damaged. WIthout good oil film in all the right places, the result will be internal temperature buildup in the engine and metal-to-metal wear on items like crankshaft bearings, valve stems, etc. I've seen some new engines that look like the oil has never been changed seize after 8-12,000 miles. On an older engine, it's tough to say as it depends on the condition of the internal engine components, driving conditions, etc. Changing oil on a regular basis IS the answer on how to avoid engine seizure. Once the engine stops, you aren't talking engine repair - you're talking engine replacement. And I wouldn't expect an engine to seize at the most convenient location when you happen to be driving the vehicle.

You may wish to have someone else look at the condition of the oil pan. Quicky change oil places are good for routine stuff, but I wouldn't expect to get a highly qualified estimate from one of these places. If your pan is rusty, it's rusty - can avoid that. However, given that you successfully had the oil changed 9 months ago, my question is if the oil change shop you went to just didn't want to open up the job for liability reasons. Go get another few opinions on what you really have. Replacing an oil pan might not be cheap if something else is in the way under the vehicle and you can't easily get the pan off. Go get a few more opinions and ask lots of questions like specifically what would have to happen IF the oil pan were to be replaced. Ask to look under the vehicle with the mechanic so that you visually understand the problem and what options exist. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?First of all is that new oil pan they quoted you made of gold? A new oil pan shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred dollars at the most.

Second not changing your oil is going to lead to engine failure. Most likely the engine will eventually either seize, or throw a rod.

Third there are alternatives to changing oil without removing the oil drain plug. Go to an autoparts store and purchase a vampire pump. Its a suction gun with a hose on it that will fit into the oil check hole where the dipstick is and stuck the oil out through the hole. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?that is total BS. you can get the plug out...they are ramming you hard. Take it to another garage...they may need to change the oil drain plug...bout $5 for that...but it can be changed. my uncle and I own a garage and we'd never do that. might destroy the drain plug but it can be replaced. and to change the pan for $1000? that's absurd...maybe $200 if the pan is damaged but not anything like you are describing.

Get a second opinion man.How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?Get a second opinion on that price (can they find you a used pan) from the junk yard. Or what about online. As long as you keep the oil level good it would do okay. Also, check on http://www.edmunds.com and post your question there for some expert mechanic input. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?1. no it is not safe for your car

    2. your car will last, but at reduced efficiency. oil keeps the engine lubricated and assists with cooling.

    3. there is no alternative to regular maintenance

And yes, replacing an oil pan will be pretty expensive (labor) as it's located under the crankshaft of the engine block on many cars. How long will your car last WITHOUT oil change?Everyone else gave good answers, so I just want to add my 2 cents...Advanceautoparts.com has an oil pan for your van for $60 if you have the 3.0 V6

took of all bults i can see but still not coming off whats the step bye step i have to doHow do u change a oil pan on a 98 oldsmobile achieva? It is not at all unsual for the pan to still be stuck on as over time the gasket becomes frozen in place. There are a couple of tricks to freeing it.

You can put a piece of 2X4 along the side of it to spread out the tension and then bang on the 2X4 with a large mallet (focusing your blows adjacent to to the bottom corners of the oil pan to maximize leverage against the seal) and this will often break the seal.

You can also use a sharp thin blade (putty knife, or regular knife) and try to work along the seam where the gasket is and pry it loose gradually breaking the seal.

Now a couple of cautions here. Don't use a large chisel or anything like that, as you may gouge the sealing surface or distort the oil pan, and not be able to get a good seal thereafter.

As far as the mallet and 2X4 approach goes, don't hit is so hard that it bends the oil pan, and don't use long hard blows that might drive the pan sideways once you free it. Remember, inside the oil pan there is an oil-pickup tube which is essentially the siphon hose that allows the oil pump to suck oil out of the pan. It tends to be metal and fairly fragile, and you do not want to bend it as it will thereafter impede the oil pump's ability to scavenge oil from the pan.How do u change a oil pan on a 98 oldsmobile achieva?you say change this oil pan to the service manager...duh!,

I recently took the car in for an oil change and they said it had a leak in the oil pan. About how much will it cost me to have them fix it?How much will it cost me to get an oil pan leak fixed on a 97 geo prizm? You should know if you have a leak or not, if you car leaves oil spots all over the place, then it has a leak.

I would anticipate a 10 year old car to leak a little, if you only add one quart between oil changes, then it probably isn't enough to worry about unless you can't stand the mess on the driveway.

The important part is to check the oil regularly so you know how much it is using and leaking.

If you are really interested in how much the cost is to repair, you can look up online or phone local autopart stores for the cost of the gasket, then go down to the library and look up the labor time in a reference book for Mechanics. (Sorry I can't think of the name of that reference book right now but either a mechanic or a reference librarian will be able to tell you what it is). Anyway, if the labor book says 2.5 hours, then multiply by your favorite shops labor cost (probably about $60-$75 an hour) and you have done basically what a shop does to give you a quote. If that is too much work to look it up all yourself, call 2-3 shops in your local area and ask for a quote. How much will it cost me to get an oil pan leak fixed on a 97 geo prizm?sounds like a oil pan gasket leak, fix it yourself would just include draining the oil, take the bolts out of the oil pan attaching to the bottom of the engine and putting new oil pan gasket around the top of the oil pan.always get some silicone to put on the already preformed oil pan gasket for extra security.could also be the drain plug or (bolt )for the oil pan.if so,buy new one. very cheap or mechanic will charge for time and laborHow much will it cost me to get an oil pan leak fixed on a 97 geo prizm?Well since the engine and trans have to be loosened and lifted about 6%26quot; to clear everything.

I believe a car dealership stripped my oil pan or plug during a oil change. How can I prove the it?

I brought the vehicle to another place and they stated that before they could perform the oil they noticed that the oil pan was stripped. Their attitude will change.I believe a car dealership stripped my oil pan or plug during a oil change. How can I prove the it?A stripped bolt would have been leaking. Chances are it has just gradually worn, and proving somebody stripped it, if it didn't fall out or leak copious quantities of oil will be pretty difficult. A replacement self-tapping bolt of the next size is very inexpensive, cheaper than your time to run around trying to blame someone, and the fix will last as long as your car. I had to put one in an older car, it was cheap, and lasted as long as I had the car.I believe a car dealership stripped my oil pan or plug during a oil change. sometimes you can get it off without doing much ... but if you have to you might have to jack th e motor up some remove a motor mounts the pan has like 20 screws the oil pump has a couple not really that bad on any truck and the ford would be one of the good one to be trying it on have fun you can do itHow hard is it to change a oil pan + oil pump on a 93 f150?very easy just make sure you have a new oil pan gasket to replace the old one with and scrape off the old one really well

How to change an oil pan gasket?

    Empty oil from drain plug

May as well change your oil filter since you will have to refill the oil

    Loosen bolts on oil pan

Take pan out, may need to pry a bit if it sticks.

Take a scraper and remove all of the old gasket and sealer from the pan and block

May as well clean out the oil pan if it is gunky, use gas to rinse, not water. Dry it out.

Put new sealer on pan careful to not plug up bolt holes

    Lay gasket over that

Bolt up to block, use torque specs. ask parts store for those. Tighten in a varrying pattern like lug nuts, not clockwise or you will tighten uneven and squeeze gasket wrong which can lead to a leak.

    Refill car with oil.

Is it an easy repair to change the lower oil pan on a 96 bmw 7 series? How long does it take to do?

From my experience working on German cars, this should be pretty easy to do. I put a pan on a VW Jetta and it took all of 10 minutes once the oil was drained out. German cars are very well thought out and the maintenance is normally very simple to complete. If you've ever done any work on cars before it shouldn't be hard.Is it an easy repair to change the lower oil pan on a 96 bmw 7 series? How long does it take to do?It depends. If you have a fairly well equipped shop, and at least average knowledge about things automotive, it's easy enough. As to how long, how fast are you?

Should I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?

I checked the oil in my Volvo this morning and found that it was packed with sludge, almost like there was dirt in it, we just bought a few months back. My question is how difficult is it to pop the pan to clean it out.? Should I try and do it at home and save some pennies or take it in, if I were to take it in how much would I be looking at to get it fixed???Should I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?if you have the tools and the floor jacks needed to jack up the engine do it yourself.Should I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?What is the car worth?

If the car is really cheap (like few grands) then try it yourself. Otherwise take it to the dealer and get it completely cleaned out. Sludge will KILL you car.

But ask the dealer how they will clean it. Some will do a very skimpy job. Other will completely take the engine apart (good).

    ==

Don't just use engine FLUSH. That is actually WORSE now because you can dislodge sludge and make it move around - and possibly block oil flow elsewhere.

Good Luck...Should I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?well first you should jack the thing up and look and see if it can be done easy or not ... some cars is no problem but then some you have to jack up the motor.....doesnt hurt to look and see if you can remove it first... most cases i say nope not a easy thing.. and you say a few months ago man a oil change and a tuneup would or should have been done right atfer you got it.. and really you should have seen it when you check the car before you got it.. man if i go to buy a car and i check the oil and its low i leave if its dirty i leave show me they didnt care for their car.. jack it up carwl under it have a look and see if you can do it.... first then if you have a problem getting it out then put the screws back in fill it with oil and try again later with a shop.. dont hurt to tryShould I change the oil pan on my Volvo 850t myself or take it in?It could be a real pain to do yourself, but of course it can be done. Some motors require you to remove a cross member in order to remove the oil pan. You need to jack it up and explore the situation. If you take it to a shop, it could get expensive. I would try to do it myself first.

if someone perviously used a paper gasket on your car then it should be pretty straight forward. if they used silicon sealer too, it would be harder to remove that while supine under the car.On a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to change an oil pan gasket?i rate it about at 3.5 some replacement gaskets come with plastic screw in studs that will temporarily hold the gasket in place while you position the pan back to the engine good luck. don't over tighten the bolts. On a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to change an oil pan gasket? It all depends how accessible the bolts are sometimes they can be a bit difficult to get at- but its not hard 3 to 4 I would say - make sure everything is spot less - I will carefully clean the service with turps(lint free cloth) and apply a bead of silicone to both metal services before offering the sump up with new gasket- do not over tighten the bolts or you will compress the new gasket too much and tighten the bolts evenly like you would replacing a wheel- do it stages first finger tighten them with a socket and extension bar untill you feel a bit of resistance then nip them with tauqe wrench to the requierd taque!

You know you need to pull the engine because you know you need to pull the pan to replace the gasket and you can't pull the pan with the subframe in the way.

So here's the trick: Use a cherry picker, rent, or borrow one if you don't have one. You can find them cheap and sell them for the same price you bought one for. Hook it up and support the engine using the cherry picker. Now get up under your car and unbolt the motor mounts to the subframe, take out the subframe, it's the frame your engine is setting on, it comes right out with a few bolts. Now drain the oil, remove the pan, scrape the old gasket off precisely, place the new gasket on the pan, put the pan back on, bolt the subframe back in, bolt the engine back to the subframe, disconnect the cherry picker.

When it's all said and done, you spent 1 evening at the most and less than $30. Add the price of the cherry picker and maybe more like $130 but as I said, you can sell it later, or take it back and say it didn't work LOL

The beauty of this is you didn't really disconnect ANY of the wires or hoses to the engine. That takes forever to put those back on.

You can do it, just dig in.

How difficult is it to change an oil pan on a 1998 Volvo SR70 Turbo?

Just checking to see if there are any crazy things that have to be done before proceeding. How difficult is it to change an oil pan on a 1998 Volvo SR70 Turbo?Very tough. The upper oil pan is also the one piece main bearing cap. The question is %26quot;where is the oil leak%26quot;? If it's dripping off the 4 pan bolts by the trans, it's a rear main seal. If its dripping off the middle of the engine under the turbo, it's the seals on the oil return line from the turbo. The return line is a very common issue and can be mistaken for the oil pan. It's is fairly easy to replace. The rear main is involved but not hard. Pan leaks can happen on the 5 cyl Volvo, but MAKE SURE.How difficult is it to change an oil pan on a 1998 Volvo SR70 Turbo?david s is right, there are several common places where the oil leaks on these engines, if you have an oil leak it's unlikely that the pan is leaking. Now if the pan got hit, that's a different story, or if you need to remove it to replace the o-rings because the oil light is on, which is also very common.

To remove the oil pan you need to support the engine from the top so that you can partially drop the subframe to be able to get the pan off.
